Getting T without therapy?

How would one go about it?

Feel free to lecture me about why I should go through the usual therapist procedure, but I just feel like I shouldn't have to pay to talk to someone whose opinion "proves" that I want T.

Also, is it possible to get top surgery without therapy?

You'd just have to find an endo to prescribe it.

good luck finding a surgeon who doesn't require a therapist's letter.

i'd also be worried about the quality of their work and facility if they didn't.

Mmm I wasn't counting on it for surgery, mostly interested in the T part of it.

it depends on your endo.  you'd have to get them convinced same as you would a therapist.

one guy i know didn't see a therapist but a life coach.

and yeah, it sucks to pay for therapy but you can get it covered under insurance if they code it as "anxiety" for example.

its been worth it.  she helped me find a group, a trans friendly doctor, work through issues.  told me that all hope is not lost.  she wrote my letters for hormones and surgery.

i'm sticking with her until all my transition issues are resolved... which'll probably be years.

out here they have sliding scales, but they refused to work with me 'cause i wouldn't drop my other therapist.  it was as little as 10/15 bucks a visit i think.

I think all of us, at one point or another, have thought about doing things the "quick and easy" way. Just getting T, however we can, and doing it our own way.
I was supposed to start when I was 17, had all the paper work in hand, and because my endo appt's were so damn expensive, I couldn't go anymore, my dad couldn't afford it, so I sat on those papers, until last year.. 6 years later. I can't tell you how many google searches I did for ways to get T without a doctor involved. But when it came down to it, I pussed out. I'd freak myself out thinking if "what ifs".
I know a tguy who started taking steroids because he didn't have the means to pay for therapy to get T. A couple years later, he's completely messed up, emotionally, and physically because of it. It's really not worth it.
It sucks KNOWING this is what you need to feel somewhat complete minus the exterior picture everyone else sees, but it's not worth going about it in your own way, under the covers so to speak.

Why avoid therapy? It only took me three months.

In my experience, transguys usually avoid therapy when they think they aren't "trans" enough. Trust me, being "trans" at all is "trans" enough.

I'd much rather skip the therapy as well. The only thing stopping me getting started is lack of money

I could afford T scripts, but I can't afford therapy, grrr

I don't feel like I need it either

There's a reason the system is set up the way it is. It's a pain when you want to get to point D but more options open up to you if you get through A B C before you get there.

You don't want to sacrifice quality because you're impatient.

And I completely second everything GQjoey said. I've been so tempted to get T my own way because the options I have in this town are next to none but like he said, it's just not worth it.

Um... I honestly don't know very well how to answer this. I was in therapy for a year and a half before getting on T... but it had nothing to do with being trans. In fact, I never even mentioned to my therapist that I might be trans until our last appointment. A year and a half or so later, I went to a doctor (regular old M.D.) who specialized in trans issues, and she prescribed me T without any prerequisite but a blood test. I was a special case, however; I had been married for a year, to someone who identifies and lives fully as female, and had personally identified and lived fully as male for over a year. She told me if she'd had any question that I was unsure about transition, she never would have prescribed it in the first place.

I don't know how that will affect me when and if I ever have the means to pay for top surgery. I'm hoping that the fact I've been on T for so long will be sufficient for any surgeon, but if not, I suppose I'll figure things out at that point, and enter therapy if necessary.

Asher, with your being only 16, I don't believe there's any possible way a doctor would prescribe testosterone without your being in therapy and having a therapist's recommendation, as well as parental permission. As other guys have said, it's quite tempting to take the easy way, to order testosterone online or what have you, but it's honestly best undertaken with a doctor's help. Without the blood tests and regular check-ups, you could cause yourself greater health problems down the line. There's a reason most guys go through the motions, regardless of how mundane or irrelevant they may seem: it's just the safest course of action, in the end.

Mmm I am a minor, but not looking for the information so I can get T now. I know that I'm going to have a huge amount of work in a year or so managing financial issues due to college and supporting myself hopefully, so might as well figure out all the transitioning details now while I have the time.

I am well aware of the safety issues, but I know there are guys out there who have done it that way without any dangers posed. And like I said, this is for future reference, there is no final decision here.

In my case, since it was free, I didn't want to do the counselling because I had nothing else to counsel about! After the first session, we ran out of topics I needed to talk about and just went onto current events for the remainder of the three months XD

I have never had "Therapy" in that sense all I have had is people who I talk to about what I want to happen.. I don't have no psycho analysis bs because personally I don't believe in it and wouldn't allow myself to be subjected to it either. I was under "therapy" or whatever for about 7 months before I got my T script.. but we do it different over here (UK)

Most surgeons require you to have two letters from independent people before they will even consider surgery.. and like Nero said;

Exactly.

GQJoey said the "what ifs" are the things you personally need to think about..
