A few months ago I got my new job and regarding benefits, one of the stipulations is that you have to wait 90 days before you can have medical insurance.  You then receive it at the beginning of the following month.  Well, as of a few days ago, I hit the 90-day mark and I just received my insurance card in the mail.  Because of my timing with coming out, I was able to get it under my new name and as a female.  This should make the rest of transition much easier medically.  I know many people are dropped like rocks if they try to change gender on the insurance plan, since they out themselves as transsexuals, so I am very happy with the timing of everything.  If I had come out later like I originally planned, this would have been a problem, but because I threw my transition into high gear, I inadvertently avoided that obstacle.

90 days?  wow...that's pretty fast, Melissa! Some people here in California have to wait up to six months or even a year to obtain medical benefits.

I'm glad that you didn't encounter any major problems....hopefully now your HRT will be covered under your insurance plan and save the difference for SRS,.... just an idea...it doesn't hurt getting the pennies from under the sofa, you know.

90 days is pretty typical as it has been that at the last several jobs I've worked at.

Yeah, I'm not really poor, so I'm not too worried about saving up for SRS.

I just found out the the HR person who has been so generous in helping me is leaving the company due to circumstances beyond her control.  As such, the above quoted statement is now an understatement.  In hindsight, it was imperative that I came out when I did and the results may have been disasterous if I had not.  Did I say I was psychic?

Yes.  For some reason I foresaw that and as a result I never panicked (about changing jobs).  I remember being nervous as <Potato Chips> about the coming out, but that's only natural.  I just wrote her a big thank you note about helping me out with my transition.

Hi Melissa,

I am so glad things have worked out so well for you.  I think the job is the toughest obstical that many of us face.  While I have been out for almost two years including going to college, I am still worried about how I will become employed as a woman. Hopefully, as I get closer to my goals, this will become more clear.
