I don't know about boring but these are the most annoying and ignorant phrases that I know of.

"In God we Trust."

"God bless America."

"...smoke a fatty.." As in, I'm gonna go home and "smoke a fatty". Ugh..

I've actually been known to overuse the most boring and trite words in existence.  So, rather than beating myself up, I'm going to go along with the annoying=boring theme:

  • Let me be honest with you...
-no I will not allow that, please continue to lie to me

  • No offense, but...
(let me just say something completely offensive)

  • Sorry, but...
-If you're really sorry, there is no "but."

  • With all due respect...
(let me just say something which shows how little I respect you)

  • It is what it is.
-Oh it is, is it?

The "so help me God" part at the end of "I swear to tell the truth...".

QuoteLet me be honest with you

That when it's used by politicians and other people who tell you that they're about to tell you something. "Well, you see, it's like this...". Argh! I have nothing against polies (or what I do have against them is the same as most people, no offence :P), but a lot of the phrases that I find boring-as are political/financial/business-related. Budget, shares, sharemarkets, down-sizing, outsourcing... Mmmm, I think all these words that are meant to scare us (or at least have an impact on how we act and think about money and business) are touted slightly too often... :icon_blah:

I think that it's really bizarre that Christian America is so into that phrase give what Jesus said about oaths:

Quote from: JesusAgain, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, 'Do not break your oath, but keep the oaths you have made to the Lord.' But I tell you, Do not swear at all: either by heaven, for it is God's throne; or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King. And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. Simply let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,' and your 'No,' 'No'; anything beyond this comes from the evil one. -- Matthew 5:33-37 NIV

I really want someone to take a stand on that point. Bailiff says: "So help you God?" Witness says: "Get behind me, Satan! I will let my 'Yes' be 'Yes' and my 'No,' 'No.'"
All changes, even the most longed for, have their melancholy; for what we leave behind us is a part of ourselves; we must die to one life before we can enter another.

"Smear campaign", and the implication that it is somehow not interchangeable with the word "politics".
