Went to see a gynecologist about a hysto this morning (friend of mine, so wasn't expecting anything weirder than sitting in a chair in the waiting room at the "women's health centre"). He said he'd like me to have one more pap and that either he could do it or I could arrange through my doctor's office. I chose the latter. I know the guy's gonna see me naked under anaesthetic, but at least I'll be asleep.

So I phone my doctor's office and the usual receptionist is away, so there's a new one there. I said "I need to set up an appointment for a pap." There was this long silence. I said "long story". She said "ah. Yes. No need to get into that now sir, certainly."

So looks like I'll be able to have it done laparoscopically. My surgeon's training for it now and he'll bring in the guy who's training him to do the surgery. It'll depend on his schedule when it happens. And I still have my mum's surgery to worry about. Mum's will have to take priority.

I imagine a day when trans people only create a wee moment of cognitive dissonance in people, and then they continue on because nothing really happened.

Having a bit of a feel for human nature, I'll probably get to imagine this for a very long time <sigh>

Well, at least it looks like the last pap you'll ever have to go through.
What exactly does laparoscopically entail? Is it less invasive than a regular hysto?

     Laparoscope acts like a tiny telescope with a camera attatched and is veiwed on a screen. The incisions are smaller scars, pain, and recovery are significantly less than with a abdominal hysterectomy.

Yeah, he said I'd be off work 6 weeks with regular hysto and one week if they could do it laparoscopically. Plus I'd probably still be able to help mum if I was recovering from laparoscopic surgery. They may still have to go in with a big knife if there's any unanticipated trouble, but hopefully won't have to.

I have been reading a bit on it so when it is my turn what the options are. I'm all for the fastest recovery by all means. Why might some not take this route?

It's not available everywhere because it takes special training. Possibly if you are in a country where you have to pay for surgery it might be more expensive. And, I guess some people aren't anatomically suited for it. Otherwise yeah, it sounds like the way to go.
