They are one of America's 10 most popular pets to have and there's a reason for it. It has a whole bunch of advantages that some animals don't. You don't need to have a yard, you can live in a small apartment, you don't have to deal with them making a whole lot of noise, they don't need near as much exercise as other pets, and they interact and play with you a lot more than other animals in the rodent family (gerbils, for example).  They are fiesty and fun and definitely worth considering.

You want a friend and companion to show you love and maybe even play with you
but not to be so totally dependent that you can't take trips or have to be with them every second of the day.
You should consider a cat to have a more equal friendship with your pet.
Cats don't need to be taken on walks, need less washing,
and use a litterbox for their business rather than depending on you taking them out.
