Now this is funny.  As a life-long (at least as an adult) advocate for taxing the churches, and taxing the property owned by the churches,and taxing the businesses run by and for the churches I had to think as I read this that perhaps there is a god after all.

RICHMOND, Va., May 18 (UPI) -- Some people recently laid-off from religious institutions in Virginia said they were shocked to find the state does not offer them unemployment benefits.

Carol Bronson, who was laid off from her secretarial job at Temple Emanuel synagogue in Virginia Beach, said she was told her unemployment claim was denied because the tax exemptions for religious organizations under Virginia law include an exemption from paying unemployment taxes, The (Norfolk) Virginian-Pilot reported Monday.

I've had to laugh how in some versions of the article there is effort to make it out to be strictly the state government's choice; that the church has absolutely no control over the unemployment eligibility.  The really special articles are those that take that angle then point out that there are options (pay the tax, file self-insurance in lieu...) but that it's up to the church, as the employer, to effect them.

Ugh.  While I do not understand why anyone would work for a religious institution, that just sucks. I would be interested to find out if the church simply has the option to opt out of unemployment insurance or if they are not allowed to contribute at all.  If it's the former, I feel for the laid off employees.
