The 2009 New Fest – the New York LGBT Film Festival – kicked off June 4 with a roster of amazing new talent and filmmakers that will certainly make their mark within the LGBT community and filmgoers alike. One of them is documentary filmmaker Jules Rosskam with his film 'Against A Trans Narrative' that explores the ideas of transgender individuals.

The film is not only provocative and bold but also well-executed and written – that in itself is a winning formula in the fest. Within it Rosskam shares his personal views and struggles engaging the audience and anchoring the subject matter; the intimate approach and candor are spectacularly poignant. 'Against A Trans Narrative' swings open the door to conversations and ideas of transgender individuals – particularly of trans-masculine identity. What are the perceptions in the community? What is the identity privileges – if any – that a trans-masculine individual experience?
