I read the article. And ol' Barney and even Joe S. from HRC are backing this.
But they also put together the last ENDA bill which also included gender identity wording.
And Joe S. even did the keynote address at Southern Comfort that year stating loudly and unequivocally that he personally, and HRC and all his supporters would NOT SUPPORT AN ENDA BILL THAT DID NOT INCLUDE GENDER IDENTITY!
Less than three weeks later, Barney pulled the gender identity wording and Joe S. said that HRC would support WHATEVER CAME OUT OF COMMITTEE!
Donna Rose resigned from her position in HRC because of their about face.
Since that time all I have heard is rhetoric from both Barney and Joe S and HRC. Yes, Barney did organize the committee presentation of trans issues to the representatives which was a great show.
And Joe S. has directed that HRC will (again) only support a fully inclusive ENDA.
It's all just words.
When (or if, given the phenomenally timid support of the Obama administration) this bill comes up for a vote and if (again) there is a battle for support and necessary votes don't appear, if Representative Frank and Joe S and HRC put some skin in the game and put their money, and reputation, on the line, then I'll believe them.
I have been betrayed before, I'm not a virgin in that respect. But too many of my sisters and brothers have been betrayed where this bill could have helped them had it been enacted as written. For them, I fear, it may be too late. For others who yet may have yet to start down this life changing path, it may be the only thing that keeps them going.
My one voice is not the sole voice to be sure, but so far all our voices together have not caught the ears of those who matter.
