Hey guys,

Not sure if some of you know buy Adrianna and I are having a though time. She lost her job and i had JUST got a part time job at Ardene's. (6 hours a week >.<) Its now coming to the end of the month and we do NOT have rent. I have just successfully landed a job at Tim Hortans (yay) its full time so i'm glad about that.

What is gods name do i tell my landlord. God knows when Adriannas EI is going to come in. I'm scared and confused and panicking. I just don't know what to say to him. I mean I will have this money but not until i get my first pay and i'm not sure when that would be. Has anyone ever been in this situation. Is there anything I can do or say?

Please let me know i'm so stress out.

Just talk to your landlord like a human. It never hurts to try and be friends with your landlord...I'm not suggesting you hafta go bowling every weekend but something more than a business relationship is nice if possible. It's expensive for them to find new tenants, the place sits empty while it has to be cleaned and sometimes painted, advertised, shown, and references checked, plus you never know who your'e going to get... just a conversation which includes when he will be paid and how much will probably cover you.

If it does not work out I guess you could always get a temporary loan or an overdraft or something to cover it (I don't know what finance is like in your country but it is dead easy to get an overdraft in my country). Chances are you will have it paid off before you have too many charges. Pay it off quick and it will be great for your credit rating...

As a last resort you could approach your new employer for an advance on your pay.

I don't know what Adriannas EI is, but they might be able to get some support or an advance or fast tracked.... Might be an option worth exploring.

Tell your LL, get a payroll advance, let the overdraft from your checking account pick it up, whatever you've got to do.  The last thing you want to do with your brand new employer is say, 'Hi, I'm irresponsible and I need extra attention.'

I've had to ask my landlords for more than one extension and they have always been helpful.  It's better to set up a plan for paying your rent late than just ignoring the situation.  Even corporately run complexes will usually work with you on rent, especially if you're normally on time with it.    We all know the economy has been pretty rough, so I think you'll find them to be understanding.  Good luck and the sooner you talk to them, the better.

funny, I'd suggest pretty much anything except for this, at those interest rates there isn't a better way to fall into the trap of forever repaying debt. what happens on the second check when she can't pay rent becuase she has to pay the previous loan AND 30%+ interest with fees. using the overdraft isn't a bad idea though, but be careful of multiple charges if more than 1 check bounces - that can also add up really quick (although banks are also forgiving at waiving fees if you make enough noise)

Erika, first of all just be upfront with your landlord. most of the time they are forgiving and will totally work it out with you, and you pretty much can't be evicted for being like 2 weeks late on rent and the first time being late at that.

Thanks everyone for the advise. Im not in a building I'm just renting from someone. I will talk to him and try to work out a payment plan. Overdraft is not an option as we have no credit rating right now. I hope that just working out some payments with him will do.

I've technicly been late with the rent though the last two months. By like one day and then by 4 but it was only because the pay days feel on stupid days. He didnt seem to care about that. But right now i cant say "yes i can get you the hole 635. Because i only have 5 bucks in my account. I get paid from my job tomorrow and thats going to be less that 200 bucks and than Adriannas EI will pay her sometime. I dunno when and it will only be for like 200 bucks. Plus bills are piling up. I"m just scared. This is hard!!

hang in there and be strong, you can pull through it.   

maybe you can make a good faith gesture to the landlord and use 100 of that 200 to put towards the 635 for this month and then use the other 100 until Adriannas EI kicks in or you get your first check?

it's no need to be completley obsessive over it right now. just take some deep breaths and talk to your landlord in the morning and see what you can work out.

Hang in there dear. Like others have said, if your upfront and honest about the situation, most landlords will work something out with you 

I had trouble paying at a place I was at years ago because I'd been laid off. The landlord offered to trade a month if I made repairs to the place

i would suggest not worry and be honest with the LL. i doubt he will throw you out for being late.

+1. At least you can say you have a full time job and things are looking better and that should be enough to allow you some leeway.

I'm not sure where you live but I know some places have emergency accounts which you can tap into for a one time payment to get you through tough times. Here we have community action which will pay one month rent and/or security deposit. The only catch is when you move , they get the deposit back.
