So, today I went to get new passport photos taken. (I had some from like... 2 years ago, and never actually got my passport app sent out... so they were no good anymore).

I had a small quandry, over whether to dress as my bio-gender or as myself; and erred on the side of wearing what I'd worn at work. I figure that's how I'll look when I go to cross the border, so that's how the photo should look.

Anybody else gone to get a passport (or renewal) [or any other legal photo identification] in the early stages or middle of transition? What'd you do, and how did you dress for it?

My last one I just went in what I was likely to travel in. I have a hard time looking like my passport photo anyway and they never think it's me, part could be I would get questioned for my frequent travel so pair that up with a different photo and there you go. I think you will be fine .  I think I may get a new DL as I had mine just replaced and it's an early in transition photo. My passport  is currently out of pages and what I am going to do is just get a new one after my surgery in a few weeks, that way I can change the name gender and picture all at once.

Just dress as closely as possible to how you will look when you are traveling.  Don't try to dress like a female just because the passport says 'F' unless you plan on traveling looking like that as well...  The easier it is for security to match the photo to you, the better.

Dress like you normally do. Try to look like you normally, or you will be questioned.

Yeah I'll have to do this soon.  I just went to get my name changed but am waiting for the certificate of name change in the mail and that's when I'll have to go get a new everything, and plan on changing my picture.  My license picture is ridiculous, it's from when I was 16 and had long blond hair.  People often don't believe it's me so I can't wait to get a new picture for it.  Just dress as you always do.

When I got my name changed, I had my new ID made the same day as my court date, so I was in a shirt and tie. That was about 3 months on T. But, if it had happened pre-T I would have done the same thing. I'd say there might be more of an issue if you were MTF, but people probably won't care if they read you as female and you come in wearing men's clothes.

I had to get a new passport a few months ago.  I couldn't believe it when I actually got sir-ed.  I rarely pass, even now after a few months on T.  Normally passing would have been a good thing, but it kind of freaked me out because I knew the next thing I was going to do was to hand over my birth certificate and out myself.   :-\ Anyway, I ended up with a pretty androgynous-looking passport photo.

Look exactly as you do when traveling.  Unless you enjoy the whole cavity search deal.

A lot of it depends on where you are going, and where your coming from, though trying to re-enter the USA has been the biggest bitch, still doing it in Arab nations like Saudi Arabia is no treat either.
