I asked one of my laser nurses if they'd heard about the Soprano magic laser wand. She said yeah, we have one. It's like the MeDioStar, a diode laser.
I had a 3 separate area treatments with the MeDioStar, and dozens with the Yag. Yag is more direct, hurts like hell, you have hairs literally jumping out of your skin, the cortisone reaction sometimes, redness, etc. MeDioStar, you get basically no immediate results and after a few weeks it's supposed to thin down.
I did not like my treatments on the MeDioStar at all and prefer the yag by far. MS hurts a hell of a lot less and is a lot faster (they just move the laser over you rapidly, and when I had it used on me they said it wouldn't burn if you lasered the same place twice, unlike the yag) but when it doesn't hurt, I don't believe it's working.
They want to phase out Yags, but they're kind of required for people with dark skin... I'd say get it done now while centers still use them.
My whole costs for laser hair removal packages for full face, frontal neck, forearms, underarms, chest, abdomen, full bikini, full legs, buttox, and partial on shoulders/full back (transferred funds) has probably eclipsed $9k. Most of those areas are 75% off for additional treatments, while UA/FA are 50% (policy change.) I've done additional treatments on bikini, leg, face, and expect to need another on leg, buttox, and abdomen. I'm kind of wanting to see what hormones do for the remaining hairs, but I have so much blond on the butt and my legs that it's kinda disappointing.
Now granted... it has made it much easier to deal with my life and hygiene. Even if 20% of your hairs remain, that's 80% less ingrown hairs to deal with. A lot of money, yes, would it have been better spent on doctors and hormones and insurance, probably, but I wasn't sure I was going to transition 2 years ago when I started. I'm still not sure I'll go all the way...
Edit: Be sure to factor in the cost of the lidocane topicals for treatments. They are very expensive. $70 for 30 grams of 5% LMX over the counter. If you have a general practitioner who can prescribe it to you, you can get it for like $10. Your laser spa will probably have their own brand as well, Sona has a 4% that is a little bit cheaper. LMX is superior because it's stronger, and not being alcohol based, will not sting on freshly shaved skin.
You will need it for genitals and abdomen, face and throat, and depending on how hairy you are, pretty much the rest for the first few treatments. If you are a big hairy dude... prepare for badness. But it's temporary pain for permanent gain.
But basically, if all they're doing is multiple passes of a diode laser over your face, I don't see how exactly it removes blond hairs. There's no pigment for the laser to target...
