QuoteIndia's new health and welfare minister came out with an idea on how to tackle the population issue: Bring electricity to every Indian village so that people would watch television until late at night and therefore be too tired to make babies.

Oh yes, that's a great idea.  Make your population stupid by having them watch hours and hours of mindless, boring television.  That doesn't even begin to address the real issue here: lack of basic needs.  Why not bring infrastructure (clean water, sanitation, electricity for other applications, education about contraceptives, etc.) instead?

I think most people would realize, that "hey, we don't have enough food to feed anymore children, maybe we should stop screwing?"

But then, people have been screwing since the dawn of time, and mostly for entertainment because there's nothing else to do (and it feels good, hey, if you're poor and in a sad state of affairs, have some sex to take your mind off it.  "Oops, we had a baby.  Oops, another baby."

*shrugs* I'm being pretty cynical here, but I have little hope when it comes to the issue of overpopulation and any ideas regarding population control.  It's too little, too late at this point.  We're screwed.

QuoteWe're screwed.

It does seem that people are grasping at straws. Religion is also part of it. I heard and interview with a guy that had 24 kids and more grand kids he said. "God decides if you have children"

Nature does have ways of dealing with things like this but it just might not be pleasant.

Nature's way of dealing with overpopulation may not seem pleasant to us, but She is just doing what's best for Nature, nothing more.

Sadhvi Sharma reports from Bombay on one Indian official's mad scheme for reducing the number of poor people.

I have a simple epiphany here... Watch the occasional good tv like Battlestar or Heroes AND have sex. At the same time. With a hookah and tea and a science magazine. SOLUTION FOUND ! D:

Considering that late night is when all the skinemax shows come on, I see a practical shortsightedness to this proposal.
