Current and future Metro employees are now officially guaranteed protection from discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity.

Metro Council passed on the final required vote a controversial measure Tuesday night with virtually no discussion but in front of a divided audience that packed the meeting room.

Twenty-four council members voted in favor of the bill, 15 against it, and one member was absent from the chamber during the vote, Vice Mayor Diane Neighbors announced.
