Had my name change hearing today.  It went smoothly, and the judge asked me if I wanted him to order my name changed on my birth certificate.  Unfortunately, I was born in Ohio, so I don't think it will do any good, but I'll give it a try.  I also got down to the SSA office and have changed my name with Social Security.  I should have my new card in a couple weeks.  And tomorrow I have a meeting with HR to hammer out the details of coming out at work, so all-in-all it's becoming a very productive week transition-wise.

I still need to change my name at my bank, with my credit cards, my mortgage company, and my utilities companies.  Is there anything I'm forgetting?  Any advice on the rest of the name change process?

And for those of you who were in on the debate, I ended up going with Hadley for my middle name.

I put papers in yesterday myself. Interviewed and approved 10 mins later. Told I'll have my birth certificate with the new name on it posted within 5 working days. Still reeling in disbelief!

Hmm.. different country, very different beaurocracy but here's a few things from my list that aren't on yours. Hope it jogs your memory to anything you may have left out.

Drivers Licence / Car registration / insurance
Healthcare provider
401k / Superannuation fund
Electoral roll / Voter registration
WHOIS records of any domain names you own (easiest one by far - can be done without papers)
Tax office

Err... that's all I can think of.

Congratulations, Jamie!  How wonderful for you.  I didn't have to go to a hearing, but the day I ran around passing out name-change papers my feet barely hit the ground.

For me, the important ones were: DMV, DoD, SSA, doctor, dentist, pharmacist, therapist, credit cards, insurance, courthouse (car and motorcycle registration and title, voter registration), bank, two government agencies I deal with regularly, utilities, friends and family.  I left subscriptions, the public library, and the places that service my car and motorcycles until later.  There always seems to be one more place.

Congrats on that. I too have just recently had my name changed, although it is different here in Canada. In Canada we fill out papers and send them in, then have to wait a few weeks to get our new birth certificates with our new name on it.

That's awesome! It must feel good to finally have that done. I'm going to the courthouse tomorrow to file my papers. It sucks though that I have to wait 4-6 weeks to file it in the newspaper before I can have the hearing. What a stupid law.

I've been making a list of all the places I'll need to update it and there are a ton of things that need to be changed. I didn't realize just how many places store our personal information. And to think...I'll have to go through the whole process again after I have SRS to change my gender on all those documents as well. Ugh.

Don't forget to change your name on the Deed to your house!  I haven't done so, didn't even think of it, and get my assessments under my old name.

Don't fret about that too much. The deed and mortgage to our house is under my old (maiden) name. I've tried to get them to change it numerous times but they seem to not be able to grasp the concept. We've been there 10 years and I've never had a problem with that.

Actually, I'm pretty sure that in Ohio you can change your name, although it's done with an amended certificate with the original still attached.  I read it on the website of that one transsexual woman whose a heart surgeon (?); she has a whole legal section on name and gender changes on birth certificates.

I don't see the point of this since wouldn't it be pretty much the same as me taking my original BC in somewhere (with the original name) if I needed it and taking my name change court paper with me? I haven't bothered updating it with vital records, because I figure if anything I can prevent them (not sure who "them" is yet, but you never know!) from cross-referencing my current name with my BC that has the wrong name/sex on it, haha. Then if I need my BC I'll just take my name change papers in with it since people would see the old name if I had an "amended" BC anyways.

Over here they amend your old name to your birth certificate (until you can get sex marker changed - that's when you get a new birth cert wih no references to the old one).

It may seem a little pointless when showing your birth cert will still get you "outed", but it's still useful for changing other documentation.

I don't use my birth cert often, but I DO use my drivers licence quite often (which has current legal name only - no sex marker, no title). Sure, anyone doing a background check still sees the embarassing stuff - but the clerk I'm buying beer off doesn't..

I'm curious what all you guys have had to use your birth certificate for. My family (and myself) didn't have my birth certificate for a long time. I had to get it for my passport but that's the only time I've had to use it.
