ok ok So this was the first time in forver that I have passed, AND it could have been a misinterpretation, tell me what you think.. maybe I am just being too optomistic

I was in the elevator at my dorm, there was a huge group of people getting off, so out of courtesy I placed my hand next to the doors while they got off so it wouldn't start to close on anyone.  Then as the last guy was leaving he said "Thanks Buddy"

Then I just got the goofiest smile on my face  (It looked like that really)  took about 5 mins to stop smiling lol.

Do you think I passed just then? I can't imagine a guy calling a girl Buddy, ya know?

But congratulations, man. I know the (very) few times that's happened to me it felt great.

One thing I didn't realize until I started passing was that it's very easy to tell if you pass with many cismales, due to this: They use gender-specific or nearly-gender-specific words ALL THE TIME. Especially in greeting.

"What's up, bro?"
"Thanks, man."
"No problem, bud."
"Thank you sir."
"What's going on, dude?"

I may keep a tally chart one day of all the gender-specific greetings/partings I hear from complete strangers while working as a cashier.

In that case, I've been 'passing' most of my life.

It's kinda kosher to use male & pseudo male terms like that in reference to girls. Whenever I see girls who dress like guys I try to drop a few more male pronouns etc. just in case that's what they're into (though that has backfired a few times).

I've never heard a man call a woman "man", "buddy" "dude" "bro" or "sir". In every place I've worked, even the female motor-cycle-riding bodybuilder with the crewcut got the same "ma'am" and "lady" as the heteronormative females. Is this really a common occurence?

I use dude on girls all the time. Just works in a unisex way I think.

I got called buddy last week too. Actually Ive been passing a lot lately. You will get there too.

I hate the word "man"....whenever someone says "thanks, man" or something, I keep worrying for the next half hour if they said "man" or "ma'am".

Congrats, Elijah. It does sound like you passed. And it's amazing how something that simple -- someone referring to you as you see yourself -- can either make your day or break it (when they don't get it -- or worse, try to guess). I still like it to this day more and more (rarely does someone not get it -- thankfully as it can become dangerous).

Well, I've been called buddy, dude and man from strangers waaay before transition when I looked undoubtedly female. Maybe it's presentation? I don't know. I'm thinking you were seen as male or gave off a male presence.

Buddy to me just makes me think of thick southern accents going "hey buddy, c'm'ere!"

Not too sure, but I do also agree with you that you wouldn't call a girl 'buddy'.
