Is your child a) male b) female or c) transgendered?

The Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board is drawing heat for sending parents an H1N1 vaccine consent form that includes an option to indicate if their children identify as "other, unknown or transgender."

Education director John Stadnyk confirmed "some concerns have been raised" about the option that came with students' consent forms. In addition to other questions about medical history, allergies and the like, one section asks the parent to check off one of three boxes: male, female or other, unknown or transgender. Stadnyk said he has personally received one call and two trustees at least another two each.

He said he did not know about the wording of the question until a parent raised the issue. "In the rush to get these consent forms out, I did not notice these particular set of items," he said.
"Be yourself; everyone else is already taken." Oscar Wilde

I don't see how that would cause any problems. Can't they just leave the forms alone?

As far as I can see, that woman just wants to pretend intersexed and transgendered children just don't exist. That doesn't solve anything.

I actually have a problem with that question on the form as well but for a different reason. Why does the child's gender even matter in the first place? I've never understood why so many government and other forms seem to need your age, race, religion, sexual orientation, gender, political party, marital status, household income, etc. Personally, I don't even think you should have to give out your first and last name in many circumstances either.

At the same time society claims to be practicing "non-discrimination" it is actually causing discrimination by further dividing people into separate groups. If you want non-discrimination, stop asking people to answer these stupid questions. Unless a particular question is vitally necessary to a form (i.e. your gender has a medical effect on something), they should leave it off. To me all of these questions are a way of treating people less like citizens and more like subjects. After all, you are no longer a PERSON but instead of a conglomeration of a certain race, gender, etc. That is complete crap and is quite dehumanizing.

As to an H1N1 vaccine, the only thing that should be on the form is the child's legal name and a blank line for the parent's signature. End of story.

The first thing you must realize is who is drawing heat?  The Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board.

The only reason is because they can then discriminate against the parents and child by casting them out of the district.  A simple political move be the Church.

Interesting Janet, but I was married in a Catholic church in Sydney in the 1970's.

I have nothing against the lay Catholic, just the higher clergy.  Especially the Dope, sorry Pope, himself.  How can one man tell so many how to live?  As far as I know that was only one man had that right.  And his name was Jesus.  And even he taught "Love thy neighbor".

Why should my life or anyone else be persecuted because of who we are?

And belated congratulations on your nuptials.

It's all OK Janet, I am a non non practicing catholic, just the way it is and has been for a long time. My Dad was actually a methodist. :-)

Many catholics have a problem with the so called infallibility of the Pope.

I did as a kid and now I just don't bother about it.

On a related note, am I crazy for not getting a swine flu vaccine?  I don't get the normal flu shots either.  I only get sick about once a year.
