My hair grows out, not down

Got an agitation:

I started to let my hair grow about half a year ago, and it's about three inches long on average now. But, unfortunately, it seems to be the kind that just grows up and out, rather than down.  :-\ I hate the style it seems to be tending toward at the moment (although I would hate it more if I cut it).

As it gets longer, might it start to flatten down by itself, and what can I do to help it along?

And while I'm here, does HRT affect the skin on the back of your hands much?
I ask because the skin creases (especially around my wrists and knuckles) are more prominent than in most people, and my pores seem massive, though the latter might just be me.

At some point, the weight of it is going to be enough to override any strange angles it may come out of your head at.

I tend to use metric; but from what I remember, three inches is about seven cm, which is no longer 'short' but not yet long enough for the weight to make a real difference. Keep in mind that any stuff happening at the very end of the hair is never going to be affected by this, again because it doesn't weigh enough by itself. No matter how long I grow my hair, it will always curl at the ends (unless I straighten it).

Styling it works well, too. I've managed to make mine curl in instead of out, though it does take some work. Keep at it! ^_^

I went through the same stage at first -- my hair is what you would call 'wavy', and for a while it mainly poofed out to the sides a lot and made me feel really awkward.  But eventually, as the above poster mentioned, gravity takes over and it starts looking more natural.  It DOES take a while however, I've been growing mine out for about a year now and it's only the past 2 months or so that it stopped poofing.

Once I didn't get a haircut for two years.  My hair looked like hell but I didn't care at the time.  Now, when I want it longer I go to my hairdresser and she trims it regularly to look good as it keeps getting longer.

At three inches you should be able to get it styled to look good.  Just be sure you go to someone who will understand that you are growing it out - you just want it to look decent while you are doing it.

It just takes time.  My hair is also thick and wavy, and going from short to long (my avatar is from a month ago), is a study in patience.  I had to suffer with a 'fro for a while.  But just remember, if it's a problem now because it's thick and wavy, once it lays down you will be envied by all your girlfriends!  Just keep it healthy, and you will be golden.

This is true. I let mine down in my womens group earlier and it fell over my shoulders all full and wavy like something out of a harlequin novel. Some of the genetic girls in the room turned physically green.

I'm hardly a beauty expert but I might add: try to be really careful about breaking it as it gets longer. With the combination of breakage and hormones it can get a little frizzy  O0

Yes, genetic girls do seem to have an obsession with this mythical thing they call 'volume' :).

I'm obsessed with volume too!!!

On topic, my hair did the same thing.  It grew up and out until it got a bit longer.

After my FFS, my hair thinned out, as I lost a lot of it.  The bright side though, is that it is growing back in.  Just takes time.

My hair is fine and straight as a poker. I'm in the process of starting to let it grow out and I'm sure I will be in for some interesting experiences in a few months!

Give it time. 3" is really still too short to worry about.  give yourself 4-6months and you will def see a difference.  i also use a flat iron and the maxiglide works well, especially the mini one for shorter hair, but you can buy the regular slim flat irons at a local beauty supply store or even a regular retailer.

Thanks for the help everyone! I feel less worried about it now.

Usually, one of my mum's friend cuts all our hair at home for us, but I've been opting out of that service because I don't trust really her to get it right.

I'll probably find a stylist.

Does anyone know about the hand thing? It won't inhibit passing, but it looks terribly masculine close-up.

since no one tackled part two of the topic i will give it a shot Hrt will decrease the size of your pores to a more female pattern and as a layer of fat is added will soften your hands as well maybe filling in some of the wrinkles with it but everyone reacts different to the hormones
