I'm pre HRT, pre coming out, pre hair removal (no money), pre everything basically. However, due to having a reasonably small frame, and East Asian ethnicity & born, I pass pretty well in person even in my normal voice when in makeup. Though the voice will be unquestionably read as male over the phone. I even managed to pass a few weeks ago when interacting with native ethnicity workers from (country born) embassy when I was collecting a passport for a friend of a family friend. One of the worker actually looked at the female photo on the passport and asked whether it was me.

I'm a graduate looking for my 1st FT job. Any reasonable job will do, though it helps if I actually applies to things..... My original plan was to get a job, move out, HRT, and transition sometime after job probation period is over (so they can't come up with excuses to fire me because of my transition). Basically following a classic path with coming out at work near the end before FT.

A idea was put into my head last month talking to somebody that since I luckily pass reasonably well already, I could consider applying for jobs as a woman. This way, I wouldn't have to worry about transitioning at work. I rejected the idea at the time, but it's worked its way into my mind and it's starting to appeal to me.

Thoughts? Workable, or crazy idea?

HUM.... Well I had thought about starting a new job once as female when I was not that far along. But I ended up starting in guy form and 3 months later once they had an idea of my personality and work style, I came out.

Looking like a female and passing for more then a week could be tough.  There are 1000's of tiny movements / actions that help define if someone is a man or woman.  Learning alot of that took quite a bit of time for me.  If you could nail the voice to pass on the phone, then I would say go ahead and try.  But odds are they may find out in a few weeks due to actions you many not have unlearned yet. 

For me It took a 8 month to a year of living full time to loose most of the guy actions.

At least in the US, you cannot do that as your information is under the national social security database as your real identity and you cannot hide that. You could tell the employer what you want to do, and they may work with you, but... you may need to be farther along. Getting a job so you have money to afford everything is #1.

The Social Security will send a letter that things don't match to their records.  It is up to the employer to respond.  Being you are not that far into transition, you might want to try getting something part time.

You also might want to be up front with a new employer.

I am planning to be up front, since it would not be possible to not reveal anything, as the employer is legally obliged to check one is legally allowed to work here in the UK. That means British passport / work permit etc. and mine is obviously male. I do have the advantage of an Asian name, so everything else will match up.

The UK have anti-discrimination law against discrimination against those who "intends to undergo, is undergoing or has undergone gender reassignment". So in theory at least, things shouldn't as bad as say the USA. At least in public bodies anyway where they are more likely to follow the law.

I'll see what happens.

I'm pretty much pre-transition, but honestly I am just planning to be upfront about it. Maybe just put your birth name and preferred name on the applications/your resume and hope for the best. Maybe get a letter from a therapist if you have one yet.

Basically, if you pass already, and state your preferred name if you haven't changed it, you are good to go I would think. Employers have to be careful not to ask questions about gender, etc. anyways because of discrimination laws.
