Semenya ran, against the advice of the international athletics body, and won - leading millions around the world to question her physique, running style and the depth of her voice.

Her sweet victory soon turned sour as reports about her gender surfaced, making the shy girl from Limpopo a media target.

South African athletics bosses defended their decision to allow her to compete, pleading ignorance of warnings that there were questions about her gender.
