Is it really that complicated? It's one of the most common names, you know?

I don't get it. My name is one of the most common and oldest names out there. It's not exactly as ordinary as Beth or Jane, but it's not exactly Nazhoni or Sibvon. I know there are a few common spellings, but I thought the pronunciation was crystal clear. I guess I was wrong. Everyone seems to want the Y to be a long "EE" sound rather than the short "I" which you'd expect (or at least, I would), given the "SS" that follows. And when is "SS" ever pronounced "SH"? I don't get it. If you haven't guessed by now, the third option is the correct one, but if you answer the poll, answer what you thought it was before that explanation.

Okay, just had to get that off my chest. It's just another little annoyance -- I finally get people to use the right name, and then they mispronounce it. SHEESH!

By the way, I'm pronouncing "sheesh" like the first syllable in "sister" and rhyming with the second syllable in my name, just to annoy all the people who mispronounce my name. :P

Sorry Alyssa,

Really, nothing is so simple that humans can't mess it up.  I always told my engineering students that they could never design anything to be foolproof because fools are so darn clever.

I knew somebody named Alyssa a few years ago, so I know how to pronounce it correctly. How could you mispronounce that...?  ???
