Talk Shows - I'm scared.

Okay this is really random but I didn't know where else I should go to talk to people about this issue other than a trans site. I sent an email to a TV talk show about a month ago. I was just sitting around one day bored out of my mind (yay unemployment) and ended up watching through several talk shows. One of them had a commercial for a future show that I thought looked interesting so I got online and looked up their website to find out when it would air.

While on the website I saw their list of upcoming shows and also of types of guests they were looking for. A lot of them were things like "Are you a gay youth and need help coming out to your family?" and also some transsexual related items about needing support and things like that. For this particular talk show this is very out of character to see positive things towards the GLBT community. I emailed them and expressed that I wanted to compliment their efforts to reach out to the community and that I looked forward to seeing these issues dealt with on their show as it may give me a new perspective about the host and his attitude towards the GLBT community. I mentioned that as a transsexual and just seeing the difference in my coming out experience and those of my friends or my fiancee (also a transsexual) that I saw a great need for these shows and it was kind of him to reach out to people who needed his help.

I guess basically you could say I was just trying to show that there are people out there who appreciated this turn in events and hoped it would be successful for the show.

Well, I just got an email back from one of their associate producers asking me to call in and speak with them as they'd like to discuss this with me further. I'm not sure if I should be scared or not.

Here's the real kicker, it's the Steve Wilkos Show! Help me out some here everyone, what the hell should I do?

I don't know who this Steve Wilkos is :P.

My guess is that you might as well go through with it -- I mean why did you email them if not?  And if you really believe that those kind of shows could help (I don't watch them so I dont know) then I think you should do it.

As for being scared or not, I would say nervous yes, scared no.

That's just it. I DIDN'T email them for something that involves some kind of follow through. I simply sent an email to their fan mail address expressing that I think it's a nice change and look forward to seeing the shows.

Steve Wilkos does not have a good past from my personal experience. I had a friend who's parents went on his show to talk about her father being gay and about the fact that their parents had chosen to continue raising the children together and living together. He went back and forth the whole show between telling them they were idiots exposing their children to horrible things and applauding how well behaved and intelligent their children were. Next breath he'd tell them how all of their kids must be so messed up emotionally because of his life choices. :(

If you are not comfortable with it ignore it. I've never heard of the person, different part of the world, but even the most idiotic talk host will have the skill to make you look like a dork or worse if they want to. And remember they want entertainment, not your happiness.

This is exactly my thought. What the heck do they want from me? I never feel like anything can be trusted from a talk show host, it makes me nervous. Hopefully they just want something dumb, like offering me tickets to the show for sending in fan mail or something like that. Keep your fingers crossed for me that it's something simple... and not weird.

You should remember first, last, and always that it's The Steve Wilkos Show, and the purpose of the show is to promote Steve Wilkos (who in hell is Steve Wilkos, anyway...) and sell advertising.  The have no obligation, or interest in whatever it is you want to say, unless it goes with what Steve says, or sells ads.  And being his show and all, those people have absolute and total control over what goes on the air, and even a marginal video editor can take the tape and make it pretty much say whatever they want.

They may, or may not support you, and what you want to say, but its their job to make Steve look good, not you.

I know, that is exactly what they did to my friend's family. More than anything I just can't figure out why they want me to call them. I hate mysteries. :(

They want you to call them because every day they need a new victim problem/controversy to deal with. They don't care about you, if you walked out of that studio and got run over by a bus they could care less, as long as they have content, they have a show.  And as long as they have a show, they get paid. And just like the old carnival days the freak show always needs a new geek.*  This freak show need a few new geeks everyday.

* - I'm using 'geek' here in the original carnival usage, not the current computer/math/science wizard sense.  The word originally referred to a performer who bit the heads off of live chickens. Now that's entertainment!

I watch the Steve Wilkos Show, for anyone who wants to know who Steve Wilko is, he's the bald security guard on Jerry Springer.

I say don't...One of my friends went on Dr. Phil once and he said they edited what was on tape to give it a certain point of view.

I think Tyra is supposed to be doing something in the next couple of weeks or so on her show that involves trans issues or people... or something. I don't know. I just remember getting some kind of email earlier this week about it from a local group. I will try to dig through my emails tonight and find it.

Tyra has the best show... right behind Ellen of course. :)

Well that was fast of me, it just happened to be the very first email I saw when I got into my inbox. Here is the info that I was given about Tyra's upcoming show.

January 27, 2010
4PM Eastern Time
CW Network
"We're 7 and 8 years old and we know we are transgender"

I am going to DVR it for sure.

Tyra is no cooler than the others, she - like all of them - are marketed to a specific demographic group.  And you fall into that demographic, that's all.

Now that has got to be targeted to a very enlightened demographic. Not that I'm prone to jumping to conclusions BTW.

Books are targeted to an enlightened demographic, TV is to idiots as magnet is to iron filings.
