A 16-year-old Spanish boy has become one of the world's youngest transsexuals  after having a sex change operation to become a girl.

The teenager underwent surgery at a hospital in Barcelona after convincing  family, doctors and a judge he was a girl trapped inside a boy's body.

The youngster is recovering after the operation, paid for by the family, in the  city's Hospital Clinico last week.

Probably fewer than 50 sex change operations are carried out each year in Spain, said Monica Martin, founder of the Spanish Association of Transsexuals.

The association's position on minors is that they think very, very carefully before undergoing such surgery.

"We are not against it, but it is a life-changing decision," Martin told The Associated Press. "It is a good idea to wait until the person has achieved maturity, legal and otherwise."

"To deny people transsexuality until they become grown-ups only lengthens the suffering of young transsexuals," Mar Cambrollé of the Spanish Federation of Gays, Lesbians, Transsexuals and Bisexuals, said.

Federation of Lesbians, Gays, Transsexuals, Bisexuals welcomed the first sex change surgery to Minor

The minor "had his family's support and endorsement of the medical team", but could not be operated on until last November when he received a favourable court decision, pointed out FELGTB

The judicial process "inexplicably delayed the completion of the sexual reassignment surgery (SRS) and violates the right of free development" said FELGTB in a statement. The youngest, aged 16, suffered from gender dysphoria since 5, according to Ivan Mañero the surgeon who performed the procedure in the Barnaclínic, a private medical clinic located on the campus of the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona, its the only one in the country that has a public and dedicated unit to treat this type of sexual dysfunction.

A 16-year-old Spaniard has had a sex change operation, becoming the country's first minor to undergo a procedure that few countries in the world allow for people so young, a doctor said Tuesday.

The two-and-a-half hour surgery was performed in Barcelona three weeks ago and the patient is doing fine, reconstructive surgeon Ivan Manero, who did the surgery, told a news conference in Spain's second largest city.
