Nah, what's really sad is that a college student would want to spend that much time at home with mom (unless she is ill, or needs help). My parents insisted that I had to go to a school at least 500 miles from home, as a way of helping me grow up (or just to get rid of me). Turns out it was not all that wrong, I could not run home and do my laundry, when I got hungry I had to learn to cook instead of whining to mom, oddly enough, it worked out pretty well.
As for being lonely, try the campus organizations, I'm sure there are big dog piles of them from chess addicts, to drama clubs, to LGBT, and the one I loved the most, the speakers bureau which gets people to come to campus and give talks, demonstrations and the like. Since I had a car I was usually the person who went to pick them up at the airport and got some quality time with some pretty famous people.
And yeah, if he ain't paying, he's out. You need someone at least responsible.
