Rep. Duncan Hunter Wants to Keep Gays From Serving, Because Then 'Hermaphrodites' Will Be Allowed to Serve

We always have a hard time understanding the argument, from folks supporting Don't Ask Don't Tell, that repealing the policy would somehow infringe on unit cohesiveness and would destabilize the military, because soldiers aren't ready for their gay and lesbian comrades to serve openly, when the desires and wishes of soldiers have never been a part of military policy. It's always about what is best for national security, not making troops feel comfortable. Which is why we understood the flurry of angry tweets when California Republican Rep. Duncan Hunter went on NPR yesterday and railed against gays in the military.

And also: "hermaphrodites" and "transgenders."

Duncan Hunter sez overturning DADT will turn the military into 'hermaphrodites'

Having gays not be afraid to openly talk about themselves is really freaking out the conservative movement. Don't you remember when anything that a military leader said was sacrosanct when a Republican was president? That doesn't count anymore.

Duncan Hunter makes a fool of himself on NPR, and although the host didn't point out the flaw in his argument, she just repeated his words back to him as if saying, "Is this guy kidding me?"

I always understood that "hermaphrodite" was restricted to lower animals which have both sets of reproductive organs.
I agree, nobody should be forced to serve alongside a snail, they would hold up the march too much. And how would they salute?
I wonder if he is opposed to idiots serving as elected officials? Maybe they should have IQ tests??

If it weren't so sad the argument would be hilarious.

I've got to wonder what the problem with intersexed folks in the military is, though.  I mean, I can see the argument against gays (I don't agree with it, but I understand it.)  And, of course, all of us ->-bleeped-<-s are technically crazy. (  ::) )  But what possible argument could there be against intersexed people?  And to what degree do you have to be intersexed for them to turn you away?  It's all just plain silly to me.  :icon_no:

Duncan Hunter is a favorite among the right wing who doesn't think that Sara Palin is conservative enough, or who would not vote for her because she's a woman.
FIGHT APATHY!, or don't...

Yeah I don't get what the problem with intersexed people would be.  I'm not sure they could expel someone from the internet for being intersexed.  It has nothing to do with don't ask don't tell.

I feel sorry for him.  He has a serious mental disorder.  It's in the DSM and it's identified by his irrational fear.  The DSM calls it phobia.

"An extreme, sometimes irrational fear of a specific object or situation.Phobias are defined as a type of anxiety disorder, since anxiety is the main symptom experienced by the one who is suffering. Phobias are thought to be known as an emotional response taught throughout life experiences. Generally phobias occur when fear produced by a threatening situation is transmitted to other similar situations, while the original fear is often repressed or forgotten."

Based on what he said in the interview, I'd say this is a pretty accurate diagnosis.

I think this argument is silly because a handful of intersex conditions can disqualify a person from serving in the Armed Forces atleast in terms of front line operations, but on the whole there's very few of these conditions which can be noticed or a problem for both the intersexed person or others. So, I can't say this argument makes any sense to me.

Also, historically military service has always been rife with homoerotic attraction. The same goes for the priestly profession(s).

I think the people they want in the military are the ones who can dehumanize whoever is identified as the enemy, hunt them down like a dog and kill them without conscience.  How many trans people do you know like that?
