I took one of my two motorcycles to the dealer for a safety recall today.  I hadn't been there since becoming Kate, so I wasn't sure what to expect.

I re-introduced myself to the manager and the man who had sold me both bikes.  I did this for three reasons:

1)   I always liked these guys.  Somehow I connected with them and wanted to reconnect.

2)   They knew I bought the bikes from them as *him*.  I felt the need to explain why they now belong to *her*.  (The old name is in the records.  I asked them to change it.)  Besides, they might recognize me.  (They did.)

3)   I wanted to sell the bike to them and thought they might give me a little better deal if they knew of our history together.

It went very well.  They asked the usual questions: "How are you doing?"  "Are you happy?"  "Are you still riding?"  I told the manager people have been very kind to me.  He said: "Why not?  Sure, some people are a$$****s, but eh."

I ended up selling them the bike for more than I thought I would.  The proceeds will pay for almost half of my surgery.  And I got to spend some time with some people I really like.

I have more room in my garage now, got rid of a bike that was hard for me to handle even when I had testosterone in my system, and I still have the other bike for when I am recovered enough to ride again.  A wonderful day. ;D

That's awesome, Kate.  I'm really happy for you.  This is just what I needed to hear today.  :)

This reminds me of another recollection in another thread where someone told of several guys who were very friendly and accepting when she was on a night out.

Ordinary people tend to accept everyone for what we all are.

None of us should ever feel second best, we all have an equal right to be here.

It seems that people who were good with people before transition retain that ability, and those who were not don't pick it up that quickly.
FIGHT APATHY!, or don't...

Nice experience Kate. I do think it's also a reflection that decent people pick up on how YOU feel. I think most people want others to be genuinely happy. That's why we comfort people in distress even if we do not know them. I think that when we meet people we know who are really happy their joy reflects on us as well.

I had never thought of it that way, but of course you are absolutely right, Tekla.

And I think you re right here, Cindy.  I am very happy these days and I think people pick up on that.  Most of us enjoy being around happy people.

And now I am off to the university to tell a bunch of future teachers what it was like to go to primary and secondary school as a girl with a boy's body.  Should be interesting. ::)
