The much-lauded writers on ITV's Coronation Street are set to rewrite the rules of the soap arena yet again, with the first ever on-screen transsexual wedding to feature in one of the big soaps (will it be the first ever for a TV drama? Ed).

The Sun today reveals that Roy Cropper (David Neilson) will finally wed his partner Hayley (played by Julie Hesmondhalgh) in a ceremony that coincides with the show's 50th anniversary celebrations this year.

CORONATION Street is to screen Soapland's first ever transsexual wedding as part of the show's 50th anniversary celebrations.

Café owner Roy Cropper (David Neilson) will finally wed sex-swap lover Hayley in a ceremony to make their partnership official.

The pair had their relationship blessed in 1999, but UK law did not then allow transsexuals to marry in their new gender.
