ok, i'm sure this has come up before, but i want to make sure i have all my bases covered here. i've recently come across some job applications that require you to attach a copy of your high school diploma. i've been filling out applications mostly at places that say they protect me with gid, but i found out at kmart, that's really a bunch of crap since they never called me even after filling out there app like 6 times and calling them to set up an interview. anyway, i'm using my name as Mekayla as previously instructed by my former manager as to eliminate the total hell i went through at walmart. but since it's not legal, and they want a copy of my high school diploma with the application(something i don't think is needed if i filled out the app). what do i say when they ask questions and want to fight me? i'm not clear on the laws here in Ohio regarding high school diplomas. i know all colleges refuse to issue you a new diploma once you graduate in your new name...am i correct in assuming the law is the same for high school diplomas as well??

please help!!!

thanks,

I think the main problem you're going to have is that the name change isn't legal yet.
.
OSU will change the name on a diploma (http://trustees.osu.edu/O_root_update/diploma_inst.php)  so I think you're assuming incorrectly about colleges.  I'm pretty sure I've heard of others on this site doing the same with their HS documents...so long as they had the legal document showing that the change was official.

ty, i mean from what i have read most everyone else has told me they wouldn't. OSU probably does it because they are more friendly to our needs. I know they have LGBT services onsite. most colleges in my area here in Ohio do not, tho we do have an OSU branch, i don't think their service include LGBT things. i will have problems but if anyone actually gave me the chance to explain it would be different. usually, no one gives me the chance tho, that's the other problem. i didn't get to post all the other stupid crap walmart wanted to do to me while i was trying to transition. more later. if anyone else, has any info...please let me know thanks!! :D

Both of my colleges gave me new diplomas after I changed my name on my college transcripts.  Wasn't an issue with proper documentation.  Haven't bothered with the HS diploma.

One thing you might try if you can't wait for a diploma with your current  name , On the applications I filled out there was a spot for other names you had been employed under. Maybe if you put the name that is on your diploma there it will cover that and they will see the name on that place of the application matches the diploma.
Just a thought. As early on I did that to cover any questions (wasn't sure if SS was updated yet and wanted to CMA).

yeah i have thought of that, and have done that on some applications, and here in Ohio, at least in this area, if they see a completely feminine name first, and then a well-known male-only name since biblical times--i think they throw your app in the trash quicker than humanly possible cause i tried that on more than one occasion with cashland--never ever heard from them for anything. i'm glad jay got his new diplomas but was it AFTER you graduated or before?? i know it's definitely easier before, but after a lot of places want to put up a fuss, definitely of it is after completion. my gender is actually changed in the dmv, i just haven't been able to get to the dmv due to extremely bad circumstances with family and friends. the app i was filling out didn't have a place for other names used and a lot of places around here strictly forbid you to use anything other than what is on your soc card, but then there are others that will want your legal name and what you prefer to be called, and as previously stated, you put two different gender names around here you're automatically labeled a freak of nature and they don't want you anywhere near their business. i have an interview with Macy's tuesday, i hope it goes well. they do protect people with gid, but if i get my id changed before hired then i really don't have to explain anything to them other than that i'm changing my name cuz really it isn't anyone's business that i'm transitioning. i really don't want the hellish nightmare i went through at walmart again.

the reason they want a copy of your high school diploma--to prove you can read and write...ummm i filled out the application so i must be able to right??..lol and hell i could read and write something for them if they asked. a factory job hires lame people off the street that have less schooling than i ever did and i feel don't need to see such documentation up front. if at all, ten years after i graduate. tbh, all my teachers have retired, the principals, and guidance counselors are all different, and the superintendent has changed. the entire school building has been rebuilt and moved about 5 miles across town. technically, the high school i went to no longer exists since they tore it down...lol. i'd actually be kind of surprised if they still had any of my records..lol. thanks for all the help. if anyone else knows anything let me know please!!! i think i'm going to make some phone calls and see if i can get any straight answers, but i won't hold my breath...lol

Mekayla, it was after.  I graduated from college 25 yrs ago and grad school 21 yrs ago.  I changed the name on the transcripts first, then ordered new diplomas.

thanks, Jay. i hope i am able to accomplish the same with my high school diplomas, tho it is still my absolute opininion it's none of their business. i can read and write, type and if they make me sit and take an hour long computer test it kind of defeats the purpose of digging it out, doesn't it? people around here are so oxy-moronic anymore it's overly pathetic.

I've never had anyone ask for my HS diploma, I'm sure I don't even know where it is.  And college stuff, if its important to them, then they get them straight from the school so they can't be, umm, altered.  And other than college teaching jobs, I can't remember anyone going that far.  I did have someone sort of ask once, but he said, "you have PhD, your transcripts are only going to depress me aren't they?"  Yeah, pretty much.  But if its any compensation, they depress me too if I think about it long enough.
FIGHT APATHY!, or don't...

yeah since it's Ohio, a lot of factories and employment agencies seem to think it's absolutely necessary to ask for documents like that even though they are going to make you sit and take tests for hours on end and then usually have nothing to do with the job you were applying for anyway. that in my opinion is definitely sufficient proof that i can read and write. especially if i pass their little testing, right? i know where mine is--the bottom of a box. i don't hang up anything in my former name. the plaque i got for employee of the month when i worked at walmart got tossed in the trash when i moved because i knew what kind of a-holes they would have been if i asked them to change that.
