Trans Bands We Love

Yeah, Lady Gaga got a good laugh with that "I told you she didn't have a d---" moment in her "Telephone" video, and those is s/he or isn't s/he rumors certainly helped her hype machine early on. But in all seriousness, there are plenty of amazing artists out there who honestly are transgendered. Here's five of our favorite spiritual godchildren of Jayne County.

BABY DEE
Baby Dee is our kind of gal: She fells trees, smokes cigars, and was recording oddball songs for voice and harp when Joanna Newsom was still in primary school. A little bit saloon gal, a little bit sideshow, and a whole lot of classically skilled, Dee transformed glimpses of her Ohio childhood as a boy into mesmerizing mythology on 2008's critically acclaimed Safe Inside The Day. Its follow up, A Book of Songs for Anne Marie (in stores April 20), evokes the classical lieder of Schumann and Schubert; check out "Lilacs" and hear for yourself. Dee is touring North America right now, and you'd be ill-advised to miss her if she comes to your city.
"Be yourself; everyone else is already taken." Oscar Wilde
