A July 12 retrial date is set for a former Memphis police officer whose jury earlier this week could not agree on whether he unlawfully beat a transgender prisoner he had arrested for prostitution in 2008.

Bridges McRae again will face charges that he violated the civil rights of Dwayne "Duanna" Johnson when he struck the prisoner six times with handcuffs in his hand and used pepper spray in the sally port of the Shelby County Jail.

After a 10-day trial, the jurors reported Monday they were deadlocked and U.S. Dist. Court Judge S. Thomas Anderson declared a mistrial. Later, a juror said the vote was 11-1 for guilty.
