Freeman does an excellent job of drawing his detectives and the supporting cast. Stride and Dial are both good, hard-working cops with deep, tortured souls. But it's Stride's partner, Amanda, who may be one of the most interesting cops in detective fiction. Amanda is a non-operative transsexual. She's the department outcast, especially after winning a seven-figure claim for harassment. She's smart, maybe too smart. She thinks she can catch the deadly killer by herself. This is where Freeman shines. He brings a lot of lady-or-the-tiger-type tension.

Viva more characters who are interesting and oh-by-the-way just-matter-of-factly happen to be TG or TS.
