I just watched the movie "Boys Don't Cry" and just realized something..

Well for one, it really ticked me off, the amount of hate there is (it is based on a true story).

Secondly: I think the reason my mom is so reluctant for me to transition is because she saw this movie   (it was a long time ago when I was little) and she is scared for me.

Anyone else see this movie? What's your opinion on it

Yah I own it, it seems to be the poster movie for FTM's. Hilary Swank did any awesome job in it. I think is depicts the life of an FTM pretty well with passing, social situations and day to day issues, but the ending was an unnecessary tragedy.

amazing movie.. SAD movie

my mom watched it with me.

I've never seen the ending (I need to put that on my list of things to do), but I thought Hilary Swank did a really good job in portraying an FtM.

The real life of Brandon Teena is so sad...I'm glad the general community has a chance to see his story. Hopefully that kind of publicity helps open people's eyes to new ideas and lead to less discrimination towards things they don't know.

Yep - I didn't like it much either.

Too dark and hopeless. (Though of course I understand that the real life story was...)

I only managed to see the first half. I lost the dvd so never managed to see the rest and I haven't bought it since. I'm reluctant to watch it, to be honest, because of what I've heard of the ending.

Well you shouldn't need to worry about experiencing lots of transphobia irl, because this day and age is a lot more tolerant than before ;D

Hey! Have they made an MtF version of this? "Girls don't leave the toilet seat up" or something?

It is a shame there are really no MtF movies..unless there are some I don't know about?

Excellent acting, but very disturbing.

However, I would like to point out that some of the choices Brandon made, in real life, had as much to do with his death as his gender did.  You lie down with dogs, you get up with fleas.  I don't mean to say he deserved what he got - nobody deserves something like that - but one can take reasonable precautions and live without undue danger, even if one is trans.

Yes, I watched it a couple months ago.  It's a good movie, but I hate the ending.  It's really depressing, and it made me incredibly angry.  Still, I'm glad I watched it.  My take is that maybe if things like this were added to the required viewing material list in schools we might see a decrease in the hate...  Of course, then the conservatives would be up in arms over schools teaching their kids about 'unnatural things...'

This is true.  I agree, he made some poor choices and that didn't help him, but I think that ultimately he was killed because of his gender.

Transamerica
The Crying Game
Priscilla, Queen of the Desert
Glen or Glenda (which is f**king awful, but worth watching)
Soldier's Girl (the story of Calpernia Adams)

I haven't seen Soldier's Girl. But from the others The Crying Game is one of the most moving films I have ever seen.

I wept.

I still do.

I have a large DVD collection and have never bought it. It is the movie that would cause me to do S.

I have seen none of the named movies except Boys don't cry. I remember what Tekla said about it and found out that she ( as usual) was very right about the meth thing. It did show a lot about how  we are viewed tho.

Yeah, and just because of the gender deal, they killed two other people, including a baby.  With a shotgun.  How exactly does BT being anything get you so mad you shotgun a baby?  That's not any sort of 'gender rage,' that's Helter Skelter.

So I think it adds up in a different way.

And this area of the country is a long way from being the kind of proud yeoman farmer, Oooo-klahoma where the wind comes sweeping down the plain, it's fricking Twin Peaks without the mountains, but all of the weird.  And that was by the 1970s.  Added to that heavy weird then very powerful drugs, (powerful recreational chemicals for a bunch of people who pretty much had nothing but recreational time on their hands) meth being the most popular and damaging and that gives you Helter Skelter.

Into this comes BT, who is blissfully unaware of the nature and underbelly of rural Midwestern America (he grew up in Lincoln, a college/government town, about the most prosperous and liberal place in Nebraska) and gets immediately caught up with the worst possible elements that could be found.  The real Lost Boys.  BT was drawn to these people because he had a huge character flaw, to wit:

You lived your life as a big fat lie
You act like you had no responsibilities
'Cause if you did it's a bet that you wouldn't be
Stealin' beggin' hustlin' and schemin'
You could'a got a job
But did you know the meaning of work
I'm talking about an honest day's pay
But you was too lazy to be that way
Always trying to take the easy route
That's what they tell me, so I don't doubt
It for a moment, not for a sec
Because you lacked all your self respect

And that got him straight into the worst bunch of the worst people you can ever imagine.  That's what got him killed.

FIGHT APATHY!, or don't...

Groundbreaking film that exposed people to radical new ideas, such as, transsexuals are deceptive petty criminals who stupidly hang out with transphobic rednecks and only "pass" by the skin of their teeth (that is, look like boys, not men). BT's story is sad, but he wasn't exactly smart about how he lived his life. And I'm not thrilled with the fact that he's one of the few FTM "poster children," right up there with Buck Angel and The Pregnant Man.

Sorry, I'm not ragging on the movie specifically. I think it's a pretty decent film in most respects. Some things just burn me up. In a lot of circles, you mention FTM transsexuals, and you get the response, "Oh, like that guy in Boys Don't Cry?" Or worse, "Like that girl in Boys Don't Cry?"

It's mostly MTF movies, in my experience.

They killed two other adults. They did not kill the baby. But, yeah, these idiots had some serious issues, not just with trans people but with African Americans and women, if you take into account the other two who were murdered. But they might have killed them regardless, to eliminate witnesses. Nice guys.

Anyone seen better than chocolate?

It is really a lesbian movie but it has a trans girl in it who plays a fairly large role- her parents disown her, buying her off with an apartment i.e. here is an apartment, don't call. There is this great scene where she is singing at this drag club "I'm not a f-ing ->-bleeped-<-!".

How about Hedwig and the Angry Inch?

Other MTF films that I know of, including cross dressing and drag queens:
Normal (transsexual husband with Jessica Lange as the wife)
Miguel/Michelle (my VCR crapped out shortly after I taped it, so I never actually watched it)
Mrs. Doubtfire, of course (just cross dressing--and I read somewhere that there's a documentary about the "real" Mrs. Doubtfire)
Just One of the Girls (has its amusing moments)
Different for Girls (British; transsexual gal runs into old boys' school chum)
Breakfast on Pluto
Myra Breckinridge (I've heard it's not very good)
Second Serve (about Renee Richards; Vanessa Redgrave is great)
Flawless (has a main character who is a drag queen)
Some Like It Hot!!! (sorry, couldn't leave that out)
The Birdcage and its French originals (drag queens)
Did anyone mention To Wong Foo? (I didn't finish it)
Ma Vie en Rose (pretty sweet)
Just Like a Woman (cross dressing; it's not bad)
The Christine Jorgensen story (I haven't seen it)
Ed Wood (cross dressing)
Not sure how to classify Orlando...
I'm pretty sure there's a Jekyll and Hyde movie in which Dr. Jekyll turns into a girl...Dr. Jekyll and Ms. Hyde?
Switch (haven't seen it--looks like a cheesy comedy)
I Want What I Want (pretty dated and very seventies)
Tootsie

Oh, and a couple of TV shows:
Bosom Buddies (I never watched it)
Quantum Leap (has at least four epis with Sam as a woman)
Tales of the City (Mrs. Madrigal)

FTM stuff:
Yentl
Just One of the Guys
Victor/Victoria
The Ballad of Little Jo
The Associate (would you believe Whoopi Goldberg as a sixty-year-old white man?)
Sylvia Scarlett (very old but now has kind of a cult following)
The Young Riders used to have a cross dressing girl, but I never watched that show
Mulan

I think I need another coffee after all that.
