The standards of care for transgendered has just been changed from physiological to medical ie:hormones and surgery  by the World Health Org.Sooo no more need for the LETTERS!!! I talked to a friend of mine at the Passport office and the news is true all you need to get F or M on you Passport is an letter from your Dr. that you are on hormones and living that in gender etc.
It is about time,all the junk i had to go through i am glad those following us won't have to go though it.

I saw this come across an Associated Press newswire feed yesterday, and it is indeed very good news.  Though, I won't start seeing the light at the end of the tunnel until ENDA (w/ Transgender provisions) passes.

my 8ball says the OP confused the new passport regulations with the SOC (which there is no connection).

I took a quick look at the WHO site and could not find anything helpful about this issue.  But that's just me I might not be searching by the right words.

As far as I know, the only change was the US passport gender marker change. The standard of care are administered by WPATH and not WHO, so whatever WHO may say does not change the standards of care. I seriously doubt we will see any changes in the standards from psychological to purely medical until we are removed from the DSM. Until that time, the medical community, their malpractice carriers, the insurance industry, and everyone else involved views the SOC as providing a certain amount of protection for providers. Change is incremental, but it is coming.

I just got my passport on May 24Th and you are correct. I had to have my Dr write a letter. However the letter had to state that I in fact was scheduled for surgery and the date. I was issued that wonderful elusive F  but my passport is limited for one year and after that i need to send them proof that i had my reassignment surgery.

I was wondering though if you can get the F if you've only had an orchi? I mean that is genital surgery!

My contact at the passport office said you just fill out the regular blue form that everyone else fills out if you had a passport in the past and send Dr. certification name,change of name if any and a copy of your drivers license with your old passport  to the address on the bottom of the form.The forms we have in Jax. Fl.go to Philly usually.

This is the same form I used to renew my passport for my name change, but I didn't give them my drivers license because I sort of needed it lol I did already have a valid passport and I did have to turn that in. I'm a bit skeptical about sending them my one and only certified surgeon's letter, but they did return my name change document and old passport (with a hole in the old passport showing it was no longer valid).

It is confusing, because there is another form to fill out if you wish to amend your passport and yet another if your passport is more than a year old. The amendment page however says it is only valid for name changes and printing errors and mentions nothing at all about amending your gender marker.

I plan to just call them on Monday to clarify exactly which form to use as they are closed now for the weekend. I'll post what they tell me once I know more, but I'm thinking it's going to be this form:
