With the 2008 presidential election looming and Republicans on blue alert for Democratic miscues, don't figure on a political NASCAR race featuring sharp left turns, despite the Republican warning of an infestation of "San Francisco values."

"I don't expect Democrats to support creation of a Department of Transgender Affairs," cracked Jack Pitney, a government professor at Claremont McKenna College who has advised the GOP.

"Republicans may be hoping (Democrats) do so, but these are smart politicians. They're going to press popular liberal issues such as increasing the minimum wage and improving the Medicare deal for beneficiaries."
