Is there a problem with getting a job while you're transitioning? I've been unemployed for quiet sometime and I wanna start T already but I can't cause I'm low on money to get my name changed and start T. Ughhh. Was hell looking forward to starting this week but I can only get my name changed next week. So, probably be like 2 weeks till I start >.< Anybody else had this problem? Where you're GP has given you the green light to go ahead but you're running low on money? Whats up with these jobs too.

I don't think your employment problem is due to transition as you haven't really done anything to start.

Its a hard time finding a job period.

Pfftt ..where I work you can get a job if you're Trans. They're GLBT friendly..I have a job and it's no big issue with them. Not sure if I'm allowed to say the name here since it's a large retail chain

Guys, don't give up or think about it. Man I know the feeling. I was laid off for 6 months and honestly all I did was look for a job. I went out every single day, looked for jobs not only around the area but also online and all. I got so desperate, to the point where I would drive out 25-almost 50 miles away from my area just to get a job so I can support myself and my mom.

There are jobs out there. You just can't sit on your rear and hope one will come. You just have to keep putting yourself out there. Do research on what employers are looking for, take the time to do research on how you can make yourself more presentable and how you can stand out from everyone else. And you'll be fine.

As for getting a job as a transguy...I haven't had any issues. My last job I had for 2 years, and during that time my boss actually encouraged that I came out. The current job I have had now for the past 7 months...I'm slowly coming out to (only 2 of my managers knows). But so far everyone has been so supportive and cool about it. So yeah, that's just from my experience though.

That's awesome Crypt77! I have been unemployed for 6months or so too. All I do is apply online or go to agencies where they look for jobs. These days, they don't like application forms anymore. Its either go online or go to an agent. Sucks but hopefully I can overcome this barrier and get myself a decent job. I feel more pressured knowing my gf is doing everything I'm not and knowing I'm a guy, I believe I have to do better than her and if things go well between us. I got to buy her a ring so yeahhh.

Oh man do I know that feeling! For me, it's not so much of getting a ring for her or anything, but just playing that role as a guy and being the breadmaker you know? Though I highly believe in equality (hell I like to be spoiled by my girl sometimes), it's just that idea of being able to support your love ones. I hear ya bro.

Damn true brother. I just wanna be like babygirl, what you doing? Put that wallet away. Lol. I wanna be loaded, show her off and spoil her. I know it's equality and stuff but I don't believe in it. She's my woman and I'm her man. I'll be putting the food on the table and supportin my future family.

accord03, I do sympathise.  Getting a job at the moment is by no means an easy thing.

However, I am a little puzzled by your first post.  You say that you can't get a job until you start on T and you can't start on T until you have completed a name change.  Am I right in this interpretation?  If so, it costs only £33 to get your name changed by deed poll, and then you just take the certificate to your bank etc to get them to change your name on your official docs.  I am not sure how it lies with the HMRC for tax purposes, but I am assuming that the procedure is the same.  Show evidence of a name chnage and they will change your name.  It is a hassle, but it is not a big investment if it is one of your bars to work and transition.

And I am assuming that you will get your T on prescription.  So, whilst you aren't earning, that should be free.

Sorry if I have misunderstood, but I hope that helps.

Good luck!

Papillon - Yeah pretty much but my mum came home today and told me she would be paying for my name so that's all settled now. T is on prescription but I don't think it'll be a big problem now because my mum asked me to use my first injection with my own money and they give me money weekly so I'll save that up and buy T :) So everything is soso good now. Thanks though. I just hope to get a job soon so I could save up for other transition steps.

No problem.  Glad you got the name change business sorted.

But, as I say, if you are on benefits, your prescriptions will be free.  You shouldn't have to pay for them at all.  And, when you are in work, a prescription costs £7.20 a pop.  So, depending on how much T your doctor is prepared to prescribe in one go, that shouldn't work out to be too expensive either.

We have a lot of bad things to say about the NHS, but sometimes it really comes up trumps.

accord03

Wait, how do I get it for free and whats NHS? I'm confused now and haven't heard about this before.
  •

Papillon

Ah!  I assumed from your use of the term "GP" that you are in the UK.  I guess now that you aren't.  My bad!
  •

accord03

Hahaha. Nah I'm not. I'm from Aus and I think we use that slang here aswell. I do anyways.
  •

Papillon

Oh pants.  I'm just serving to confuse you then, aren't I?  Sorry!  *slinks away into the undergrowth*
