I Got a Job... Help!

Ryan

I got a job, which is great, but I really, REALLY don't want to have to disclose that I'm trans.
Problem is that they're asking for "One form of ID (passport, driving licence or birth certificate)".

My drivers licence has my old name on it, as does my passport. But not everyone has passports or drivers licences anyway, so I can say I don't have them. I have a birth certificate, which is obviously in my old name.

What do I do? I have my debit card, bank statements and student card if they count as ID?

Also, does anyone know about National Insurance Numbers? Mine came up under my old name in the jobecenter so they changed it. Does this mean that it will come up as Ryan everywhere else?

Thanks

I would send off for a new drivers license with Ryan on it. Should only take a couple of weeks. Say you lost it and you've applied for a replacement and can bring it in when you receive it? And just say you don't have any other form of ID.

It's a tricky situation, definitely.

As for NI numbers, I know you can change your name with the Department for Work and Pensions... but I believe they ask for a GRC to change your sex. I have no idea if that will come up. I know the tax office is incredibly confused by me, because my employer's have me as Mr Taylor, the tax office have me as Miss Taylor and also somehow as my old name too. Stupid paperwork.

Oh, and I forgot, congrats on the job!

Thanks :)

I've been meaning to get around to getting my new licence. I wanted to leave it as long as possible so that I'd still look like the photo with T and all that.  I'll be sorting a new one out tomorrow but it'll probably take a while to arrive.

I might just take in everything I can find with my name and photo on. I have bank stuff, student ID and a rail pass.

Usually your id has to establish nationality.

Yeah, I would. Take anything with photo or name and address and just explain you're waiting for your license to come back if they ask.

My photo looks silly to me now! I had it done pre-T, when I first had my name changed. If anyone mentions it I just say that's how I looked at 17 when I applied for my provisional! Although I think you can pay to have the photo changed whenever you like, £17.50, I think.

Also, Ryan, when you fill in the form for a new license. Make sure you tick the box that says you have to change your details for medical reasons. That way it should be free. I sent them a cheque and they returned it to me.

I think having a British National Insurance number will be ok for nationality until you get some accredited photo ID. Hopefully...

Excellent, thanks Tay!
I was wondering about the cost thing, cause I know it's about £20 for change of details and £20 for photo. Do I have to accompany my application with a doctors letter or something to prove that it's medical? I've got one lying about that I could photocopy.

Can I get my licence as male without a GRC? What happens if I just tick the male box?

I wrote to the Department for Work and Pensions so they would change my details in their system and send me a new NI card. They wrote back to say they had done the name change but that you need a GRC to change the gender. And it took at least 3months to get my new NI card.

Driving licence is definately the easiest thing to get changed. It's free to change name, address etc but I payed £20 to change the picture. Mine definately took less than 2 weeks to arrive so it's pretty quick.

Congrats on the job!

Ah, so even under medical reasons, I still need to pay for a new picture? I'll send a cheque off anyway and they can do what they wish with it.

I'm so glad in the US, we go to the BMV office, they take your picture, and you have your ID in 20 min. Your student card may work though.

Send the doctors letter, deed poll, application form and a letter asking them to change the code from female to male.

If you look at your licence you'll see a long code with the first 5 letters of your surname then a random number then your birth month. Except females have '5' added to the first digit of the birth month. So if you were born in March you would get it changed from '53' to '03' or born in December you would change it from '62' to '12'.

Hope that makes sense.

You forgot the part about the long, slow lines...

Excellent. I'll try and get all that sorted and sent off tomorrow then :)
I was born in December, and there's 62 on my licence, so I know what I'm looking for when it comes back.

Zombies: At least in the UK, our name changes are completely free and take like 10 mins to do with no legal process at all :P

I don't understand why the DWP won't change the gender without a GRC. The GRC board have no obligation to approve you, from what I understand from the website. It just seems stupid that you can have a male driving license, a male passport and everything else but they still refuse to acknowledge your gender identity.
It just seems strange.

I sent my driving license off with a new photo my deed poll and letter from the doctor and didnt get charged anything- was expecting them to write back demanding the money for change of picture but they never did. Also when i changed my name to Mr A__________ at HMRC they changed it straight away but did say they couldnt change my gender without the GRC.
Once i'd phoned the NI people and sorted out with them i got my new card within a couple of weeks
