Kinky Boots was pretty good, I'm still pretty fond of Pricillia, Queen of the Desert had an interesting mixture of humor and pathos combined with some of the most spectacular scenic background I've ever seen. The American remake was not nearly as good.

You guys remade 'Priscilla', why?
I went to see the musical for my birthday, that was a giggle.

Can't come up with any ideas of our own in Hollywood anymore is my guess.
The American remake of Pricillia, Queen of the Desert is To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything, Julie Newmar, exactly the same movie, with bigger stars, less pathos, a lot more bland and highly sanitized.

Has anyone else here seen "I Want What I Want?"

I think that's the first one I ever saw.

Same here....I remember sneaking off to a backroom of our house to watch it on a small portable TV in the late 70's ;)

It was the only TS movie I saw for many years, and although it was made on a tight budget the imagery has stayed with me all my life.

...and at least the end was happy ..even if it brought me to tears..  ::)

Boy's Don't Cry is one. I also enjoy this comedy one that had a TG in it I forgot the name but I think it was called Crazy People. It was set around Christmas time and they all were insane. If anyone know what I'm talking about PLEASE message me. x3

Soldier's girl. It is about Calpernia addams' relationship with Barry Winchell, who was pretty much murdered for loving a trans woman. I cry everytime I see it.

At the moment it's a toss up between Switch - I WISH! and XXY which is rather closer to the horrible truth for me.

BUT

My favourite Transgender film hasn't yet been made and that is the one that I wrote as my MA dissertation (and folks this has NOTHING whatsoever to do with the J.Michael Bailey book by the same name)

My film for which I have a professionally edited Script now in it's 6th draft which also already has some coverage (if you are in the film industry you'll know what that means) is entitled "The Man Who Would Be Queen" and it deals with the struggles of someone who has the misfortune to be born both Transgenderd and the heir to the British throne.

If anyone with contacts in the film industry is interested to have a read without prejudice please do PM or email me.

Here is the pitch:
Quote
Imagine you are heir to the most powerful throne in Europe, but as you have grown up you have become aware of a problem. You are also transgendered. What do you do?

When you are a Royal, have undergone gender surgery, and the establishment are united against you, perhaps your people are the only ones who may save you.

Set in a parallel contemporary world, this is a modern re-telling of the 1936 abdication crisis complete with updated issues for the 21st century. The motivation for the story arose because my maternal grandfather knew Edward 8th personally, and further, whilst growing up I myself suffered from issues of gender identity which happily I was able to resolve before I became an adult. However I wondered what might happen to someone like a royal, who was barred from any solution by their social position.

The story thus follows the dilemma of someone who has two mutually incompatible sides to their being. Both are aspects of their personal truth. Which side should they choose and which sacrifice? Or is there a way for them to have both? And what of the morality of keeping national figureheads locked in gilded cages in which they must sacrifice their humanity for the sake of appearances?

The prince's double life, a shameful secret carefully concealed from his father King James III, is outed in a tabloid newspaper. His father first attempts to cajole him into giving up his lifestyle, then resorts to coercing medical staff to subject Julian to electric shock treatment with the hope of straightening him out. This fails when Julian's mother rescues her child concealing him where he can be treated with more sympathy.

A secret decision is taken to explore gender change. Julian now undergoes meadical treatment to become Julia. She explores her feelings with her psychiatrist, realising that one cannot run away from one's own identity. Both side of her nature, her royalty and crossed gender, are a matter of heredity. Ultimately determined to play out her hand she elects for sex reassignment surgery but, fearing her fathers interference, conspires not to inform him until afterwards.

At first things seem to go to plan. When the king finds out about Julia's change he appears to accept it. However Julia's sister, Helen, disagrees blowing the story to the media before the King and Prime-minister are ready. The stress causes the King to suffer a stroke and brings Julia prematurely to the throne.

A full blown abdication crisis ensues with different factions of the royal family and political establishment battling for the heart and soul of a nation, and indeed the very survival of constitutional monarchy itself as the prime minister calls a referendum.

Julia makes several early errors. An over enthusiastic young PR agent suggests she appear in a Gay pride event, which people hate, and she appears on a television phone in, which backfires horribly with the audience voting to get rid of her.

Isolated and losing ground Julia gains a surprise ally in the form of Jerome, an estranged old school friend and now an injured war hero. She learns fast and the battle turns as the various characters begin to reveal themselves and the people realise that, for all her unconventional behaviour, Julia is compassionate and just to the core with a passion for upholding the rights of her people. A charity rock concert, held in the palace grounds, in aid of war victims also goes down well.

People are unimpressed with Helen's attempts to subvert the succession, the true depths of which are explosively exposed in an edition of the BBC's flagship political program Question Time on the eve of the referendum which will decide of the future of the monarchy. The final result is that the people vote to retain monarchy with Julia as sovereign, thus proving that sometimes the best man for the job is a woman!

The whole story, in one sentence please.

1) Soldier's Girl. Lee Pace's portrayal of Calpernia Adams is beyond extraordinary.

2) Normal. Jessica Lange and Tom Wilkinson star in a very believable tale about a midwestern family's struggle to come to grips with the father's GID.

As for Transamerica, I found it utterly shallow and forgettable.

I wouldn't consider either "Hedwig" or Priscilla to be "mainstream", but they are by FAR my favorite in the genre.  "Hedwig..." is my favorite movie of the decade (at least).  The stage musical of "La Cage..." is excellent as well.

Loads of really good movies here, so I won't repeat them. One of my favorites is 'Tipping the Velvet', Okay, it's more of a lesbian film than a TG one and more of a 'made for TV serial' than a film. ??? But the two main characters do an awful lot of cross dressing and it is brilliant. I've made my choice and I  stand by it :P

I absolutely LOVE Tootsie! Dustin Hoffman is my favorite actor of all time.

I like Switch a lot too but I was very sad when she died (sorry if I ruined it for anyone)

I have to agree with a previous poster about disliking RHPS. Same with Hedwig. I personally detest them in a Silence of the Lambs kind of way. Last thing I want is for somebody to equate me with that.

Gotta second the votes for Ma Vie en Rose, Different for Girls, The Crying Game and Better than Chocolate... But that's getting a bit off mainstream. Just watched XXY. Another great one. Can I toss Beautiful Boxer and Iron Ladies in the mix?

Breakfast on Pluto! <3

and 'to wong foo'

You totally stole my answer.

I am a really big fan of Cillian Murphy, so I watched the movie more for him than I did for the TG factor. But I ended up really loving it. I wish I could find the book somewhere too. and 'To Wong Foo- Thanks for Everything' was an adorable movie. :)
