Celebrities such as American Idol favourite Adam Lambert make androgyny seem glamorous. But gender bending doesn't play well outside the spotlight of pop culture, as Kathleen Winter shows in her fascinating debut novel, Annabel.

Winter, who for many years lived in St. John's, Nfld. — her look-alike little brother is the established T.O. novelist Michael Winter —and now makes her home in Montreal, explored the divide between the sexes insightfully in her previous book, a collection of short stories titled BoYs. She ups the ante considerably in Annabel.
