I am not very educated in MTF surgery but have seen a lot of references on the forums here about SRS and GRS.  I know what they stand for but I was curious - is there a difference?  Or is it like with FTM top surgery there are just difference procedures with the same result?  Also would top surgery for an FTM be considered SRS or GRS, or are those terms primarily reserved for MTF surgery?

only difference is the acronym, the meaning (surgery) is the same (see tongue in cheek table).

PHS considers top surgery to be good enough for definition of reassignment (due to lackluster bottom surgery results). If a state thinks it's ok for legal purposes is another matter.

That's what my therapist calls it and I love it!

I go between SRS and GCS, but like others have never been a fan of GRS, like was said before my gender was always female, so that never changed. My secondary sex characteristics were changed to match my gender, which confirmed my gender, but my gender never changed.

I've been confused by this for years and I think much of it stems from the word gender itself, gender means one thing and gender-identity means another yet we as TSs use it more in the sense of gender identity in my opinion (the amount of heated discussions I've seen over those two words, not just on TG forums either!).
So in that sense it seems ridiculous to consider it possible to change your gender identity as it is something considered fixed from birth. Which is why I don't use GRS. SRS makes sense to me because the sex, the physical characteristics ARE being changed... and no one can deny that? The sex is being reassigned to match the gender (identity).
I consider GCS to be misleading because the surgery itself is on the level of sex not gender. The surgery involves changing the sex so to me SRS is the clearest and most relevant name for that particular surgery. Confirming ones gender-identity takes nothing more than coming to terms with ones self either alone or with a therapist, IMO.
I'm still open to GRS if someone explains the particular use of gender better within this context, the word gender is something I'm scared of because there are so many different ideas and meanings behind what it actually really....*breathes* means.
"Gender-identity" I understand, the word by itself "gender" seems to be the confusing part for me.

The various acronyms pointed out for the procedures that make up "reassignment surgery", whether GRS, SRS, GCS, etc.. don't really make sense for the reasons cited above.  I like to call it for what it is, like the set of procedures that made up my (MtF) 'reassignment surgery' have really cool names like...

Penectomy
Orchiectomy
Clitoroplasty
Vaginoplasty

I like to just rattle those off, rather then say 'sexual reassignment surgery'.. I think the first one really gets the point across and a listener's attention real quick ...

Yeah I like to say vaginoplasty sometimes but it also includes labiaplasty.....

My surgeon used the term GRS, but I think it's all the same thing.  Who cares as long as you can get it done. 

I told my friends that I was going to get things reconfigured to where they should have been in the first place.

yeeeeah I dunno... rattling off all those names to someone, I'd be surprised if they didn't go in one ear and out the other. A nice, neat little all encompassing acronym is great, and highly rememberable.

I was mostly being sarcastic when I posted the actual procedures.  I don't really rattle those off to people.  But they do sound really good for my tax forms, for getting the surgery deducted on my taxes, and convincing legal entities that they should change my gender on their paperwork!!!

But even with SRS/GRS, etc.. many people have no idea what that means... I've actually done this before,  , but if for some overwhelming reason, feeling like I need to impart on a person that I'm talking with, and they aren't a close friend  ... I have said, "well, you know, the 'bottom surgery',"  and kinda winked....   

Luckily, I think I've only had to tell 3 people that aren't already close to me, that I've had "bottom surgery"....

Hmmm...  I don't even worry about the accromims and what not.  It's just not that important.  The important part is the I needed surgery to correct a birth defect, which was done.  I've only had one person ever ask me if I had the surgery and I simply said yes, no acronyms, just simply surgery.  If I were to use an acronym it would be GRS - Genital Reconstruction Surgery, because that's what was done.

Re-Assignment doesn't translate well in Danish. I use a word which would be simmilar to sex/gender correction surgery. Unfortunately we don't have separate words for sex and gender up here.
