"I don't know how to dance," he says. "I was never allowed to dance as a child or go to dances, so now it feels a bit off."

Spoon, 29, grew up in a devout Pentecostal family, where the sin of strutting and swaying was the least of his worries. The transgendered musician was born a girl, but at the age of 20, started living as a man and writing country tunes -- a potentially dicey proposition in conservative Alberta. "I was unharmed at that point," he says. "I didn't write overt queer songs back then, but I do now."
