I have never had any success at getting my family to refer to me as my female given name rather than my unisex nickname for it (which I never chose and don't like, but I suppose my mom may have been a bit right about the "You'll thank me for it later!"), changing my ID would only be formalizing an already existing situation. People at work know me by my female name, though anyone that's run into my mother has likely also heard the nickname. Problem is, I don't *like* that name, so I'd be tossing something I do like in on top of that if I did change it to anything else...and my family will still call me whatever they feel like calling me until the day they die, surely. It's been over 10 years of trying to "be" a woman to everyone else (well, I gave it a good try, at least?) and still the only time they use anything other than that nickname is when my middle name is also attached and they're yelling at me.

Work hired a girl for the summer with my old birth name. One day she was working, but I wasn't aware she was in the room, and one of my coworkers looked in my direction and called out her name. Very odd feeling for a second and then I realized she wasn't talking to me (she hadn't used that name in >1 yr for me).
If someone yells it in a crowd, I will usually pick out my full name, sometimes one or two of the most common names that are confused with it that people call me by accident, some frequent nicknames for it that I don't use, the one my parents use (which is very rarely - as in I've never seen it for anyone else - used as a nickname for that particular name), and a few names that rhyme with that one. Also "Hey you!" and occasionally "Excuse me", but it seems as though very few people use the latter these days and just run you over instead. ;-) Makes for a lot of thinking you're hearing voices, let me tell you! And yet my birth name still feels a little weird to me, even though just about everyone that actually uses it has never heard any other name for me, almost as if they're tripping over it. Maybe they are. Maybe I always have been.
Re: blood - I have this one lab tech at one particular lab that I'll always ask for, my mother recommended her because she has problems with them finding veins in her and found that woman to be good at it, my problem is I'm just squeamish and can't watch it, or anyone else getting it taken, so it's a Really Good Idea if I lie down for it instead of sitting in the chairs they use for most people, and she won't make fun of me for it. If she's not in that day, I go back another day.
