So I finally got in to see a military therapist here, who obviously doesn't specialize in gender issues, and I'm seeing her for my social anxiety.  I feel like a lot of my anxiety is caused by my dysphoria and I'll be telling her that.  Hopefully she's not transphobic and she'll recommend hormones/medical treatment so my insurance will cover it.

I'm seeing her next week and I'm really quite nervous, because I need her approval on this.  Any tips or suggestions for working with a regular therapist?

On a positive note, when I went to the front desk with my mother, the lady behind the counter asked her "Is this for you... or your son?"  And then got embarrassed when my mom said "My daughter."  And then when the lady came out looking for [female name] she asked my mom and another lady their names, then went to the front desk saying "I can't find [birth name]!"  I was binding but I didn't think I passed, but apparently I did enough for those 2 people, so that was cool.

I haven't had any good come from military health care, they won't cover anything TS related. Depending where you are the therapist might know a little more about where you can go to find help. Even if a regular therapist doesn't have experience with gender identity they should be able to help you with your feelings about it. I've told my regular therapist (non military) and she was able to write a supporting letter for HRT for me. Good luck and congrats on the passing.

Yeah, I've heard plenty about the military not covering TS related stuff.  It actually specifically says that it isn't covered on the insurance website.  I also heard though that if a military therapist will write you a letter your insurance has to pay for it?  Not sure.  I've already been seeing a gender specialist but I don't think it will hurt to see someone else too.  Thanks!
