Utah gay activists protest Mormon church remarks

SALT LAKE CITY — Gay rights activists staged a silent protest Thursday outside the headquarters of the Mormon church in Salt Lake City in response to a church leader's remarks that homosexuality is an immoral condition that can and should be overcome.

The sermon by Boyd K. Packer, president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, came Sunday during the 180th semiannual general conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Salt Lake City.

In his remarks Packer said some would argue that gays "were pre-set and cannot overcome what they feel are inborn tendencies toward the impure and unnatural. Not so! Why would our Heavenly Father do that to anyone?"

The LDS "church" said, that she is against bullying of gay folks. A gay Mormon said:

I don't know about Mormon bullying. But I can tell you when I was still a scared, closeted, repressed gay man worried about going to hell, one of the men in my Priesthood meeting said, "I hope they don't find a cure for AIDS till all the gays are dead." And one of the missionaries said, "Homosexuality must be next to murder." When the father of one of my friends said, "I'd rather hear that my son was dead than that he was gay," my friend went home and slit his wrists. So what qualifies as bullying? Leaders of the Church saying we are following Satan and are weak-willed sinners if we can't force our DNA to change? You are so right. No wonder so many LGBT people reject the church and God.

Who gave these people the right to speak for God?  Is not saying you know the mind of God a sin in and of itself?

Why do they not do as Jesus did?  Love the sinner.  They only wish for other people to die.  It is no wonder the Muslum  countries  hate America so.  We are truly the Great Satan.

It is somewhat ironic that less than 50 years ago (from personal memory) the Mormon church was being marginalized by other Christ- centric churches and was widely considered to be anathema to true Christianity.  The great grandfather of some personal friends had been one of the survivors of the trek to Utah lead by Brigham Young after the lynching of Joseph Smith in Nauvoo Illinois.  The family was however "closet Mormons" and were likely to get the same bullying for being members of that church in the town they lived in that GLBT folks now get at the keyboards of good thinking Christians.  It seems that all it takes to shake off the good old days, is to get top rank funding from wealthy members, and then find someone that you can marginalize to show your fellow Christian's that you are really "one of the good god guys after all!!
