interviewed today for a (part time, possibly seasonal) job at Wally World.

Presented as Tammy, of course, and was up front that I was full time and would, if lucky enough to be hired, expect to be related to and considered "just another woman"

I didn't get any "bad vibes" and I think I answered all their questions in a way that impressed them. so far so good.

But you never know. this was just the initial sort of "personality interview" (i.e. "describe a time you encountered a dissatisfied customer and how did you act to resolve the situation?" - that sort of thing)

I'm supposed to get a call tomorrow (today now) to set up a time on Thursday to interview with the store manager.

Hopefully all goes well. I told the lady today that I frankly had a vested interest in being a very good employee because not all businesses were as inclusive as Wal Mart and it was in my interest to keep a job at a place which treated me equally because not every door was open to people like me.
That wasn't just BS - even for a low-end retail minimum wage shlub job, it'd have a lot of value to me.

Good luck to you. I've been through too much "we'll call you tomorrow" with no actual call. Just hope I absorbed all the bad luck !

I have tried to get work with Walmart myself and still nothing.  No one even contacts me back.

Good luck, Tammy!  Wal-Mart seems to be on board with hiring diverse groups of people.  Hope this works our for you.  If they hire you and you like it there, you can get on the management track much, much faster there than at most retailers, and the pay and perks can be pretty good too.

I hope that's so. The entry level jobs are not long term solutions, but moving on from a place with such a trans-inclusive reputation wouldn't be ideal either.

Best case would be to move into a level that made it worth sticking there long term.

Don't fret too much, more and more companies are becoming inclusive.  Saves money, increases retention, possibly makes them a little money as well   I have met a few trans ladies who have worked at Wal-Mart and met lots of people from all walks who couldn't get a callback.  They just have that many people apply, to make it to interview stage is a good sign.

Great comment!  Griffin is right, Tammy.  That you've made it to the interview stage is a GREAT sign.  When you go to the interview, just talk about what you can do for Wal-Mart and how you can make the customers happy and sell stuff.  You know what you're doing.  You'll do just fine.  Good luck!

So far so good!

The manager confirmed all my best impressions (in fact, I had to bring the issue up, he never mentioned it on his own) - he assured me, in essence, it was none of his business nor of Wal Mart's and there would be no complications. No discussions of bathrooms or any such thing.

He also confirmed that they hoped it would be a full time job and that yes, they tried hard to promote from within and the door was wide open on that score.

I've not been told for sure yet but i'm feeling very good about it.

(and, of course, in an effort to rain on my parade my wife said "I'm hoping you get a job but I won't be shopping at that store as long as they have a man in a dress working there" - I'm thinking it's about time to cut the cord on that issue)

I am glad for you. I've heard that every cloud has a silver lining-even if it rains the world still needs the rain! There is always more than one way of looking at it,Yes?

It's looking WAY good for you, Tammy!  I'm thinking you're 8/10ths of your way there! 

Hey, I try to stay out of people's personal business and avoid controversy and critiques, but I must agree with you about the "cut the cord" comment you made.  That's a major bummer, girl.  You've got to do what you've got to do.  We're all here hoping for the best for you.
