Clare

Fairly recently I got my Deed Poll document and obviously need to now inform the various companies and organisations of my name and title change.

My problem is that I'm not entirely sure who I'm contacting. I finished a HND in June so since then I've been looking for a job since so am unemployed. Currently, I'm also living back at home with my mum and am not yet getting Jobseeker's Allowance. Partly because I want to get all the docs updated, new cards and everything so I hopefully don't have to disclose being trans to them.

But since I don't (and never have) work, don't own my own property or have a driver's license or passport who do I contact? Like do I still contact HM Revenue and Customs, DWP  and so forth even though I'm not paying tax/working etc? I'm at a bit of at a loss!

Additionally, regarding DWP, is that who issues my new NI card? I'm also getting Disability Living Allowance for being visually impaired, which DWP sort, so I need to contact them but should I do it in one letter or what?

What docs should I also enclose, just the letter and copy of my DP?

I'm not really used to doing this and don't really have many people to ask, even if it does sound a little silly having to ask!

[In case it's relavent, I'm 21.]

Thanks in advance!

I'm struggling with this aswell revinues and customs especally asking me for information I don't know.

as for NIN I was told by the deed poll service to send a letter containing the deed poll to this address informing them of the name change.

ABW1
National Insurance contributions Office

And request a new card if you want one.

There's info on the HMRC website about change of details, I know the day I got my new NINo card through was a very good day indeed.

Since you've never worked, do you have an NI number yet?

In any case, I suggest you go to your local job centre first and ask them who to contact. I wouldn't be surprised if they will do it for you. Women get married all the time and change theirs.

But remember, you must also contact the local authority, partly for your council tax but also your voter registration. These must be changed by law.

You should be able to get your educations certificates changed. But this may be more of a problem, since these people are a bit of a law unto themselves.

Your Dr should know, if he doesn't already.

The only others who may need to know will be commercial organisations with whom you do business, Pensions, savings, life assurance and so on.

Yes you do need to contact Tax & NI even if you have never worked. You also need to do it ASAP as when you come to get your GRC the start date for your two years waiting time will be NOT the time when you started treatment but the time when your documentation was changed.

At very least you need to contact

TAX / NI
BANK & ANY CREDIT CARDS OR LOANS
ELECTORAL ROLL
DOCTOR

Keep copies of the letters you send to them AND THEIR replies as you will need this as evidence when you come to apply for a GRC. In your letter ask them to write confirming that the necessary changes have been made and keep those replies filed safely. YOU WILL need them in two years time.

Thanks for this. And to everyone else who replied. Been quite busy lately so that's why I hadn't really had chance to reply. I'll get onto whatever I haven't sorted already. I'll ask for confirmation if nothing other than peace of mind, but yeah good point about requiring it for GRC.

As to the poster who asked about whether I have a NI card. Yeah I do. Hopefully I'll get my new one soonish. Hoping to get all this sorted before the new year. Don't know how realistic that will be though with the Royal Mail no doubt grinding to a halt with Christmas coming up.

But, I digress. Thanks again.
