They do not all believe in how much, or little, they ought to push it onto people who don't believe.
They do not all believe in the same texts.
Hell, they don't even agree on the name.

Most atheists I know don't care what you believe, they just don't want to hear about it 24/7 and so end up telling people to knock it off. That doesn't make 'em nut-jobs.

I'm a heathen otherkin.
I never get harassed by atheists for my beliefs, mostly cause I don't express them uninvited and I don't push them on others and because I don't treat them as better or more valid than anyone else's beliefs.
I however get harassed by Christians at least once a week, and not just for my beliefs, and that's not counting the more than daily events of getting YHVH and Jesus and Hell thrust at me by media, friends and family. It gets old, fast.

It appears to me that the problem is that America's dominant religion is a form of Zoroastrianism, with a nod to St Paul and Jesus. 
At least that is how the Evilgelical cash-for-salvation types who get all the attention come across at this distance.
Very little to do with modern Christian thought, being wrapped up in a dualistic God/Satan, Angel/Demon Armageddon fearing mindset, straight out of ancient Iran.

As far as school, if god is taught, so should atheism, gnosticism, paganism and every other form of belief or non-belief.  But when would we have time for the three R's?

You are 100% free to put as much of god as you want in any school you are willing to privately finance.  The Catholics have been doing it for 100 years now.
