Guy bought me a drink at the bar the other night. We were cool, we've met prior and got to know each other. I was flirting with him, he bought me a drink, we shared it.

Got a nasty cold -.- ugh, and I knew it was from him, I can sense it. The second I put my lips on that straw I was like, "Ugh, I'm gonna get sick from this, I CAN TELL!!!!"....

So yah, I got sick cause I shared a drink with a guy. Luckily it's a 2-3 days sickness, and I'm just about over it now.

I'm glad you're getting better.

I just thought I'd be lucky if all I ever catch sharing stuff with a guy is a cold/flu.

Ahh, an issue the good Dr. has an answer for.  You need to drink drinks with a much higher alcohol content.  Alcohol kills germs.

Yuk, and be careful of spiked drinks. Not sure what the protocol is? Go to the bar with him?

I'd like to know because it has been a long time since I have been going out and not too sure how to protect myself in these situations. And only recently going as a woman to  'normal' (sorry hate that expression but didn't know what to use) bars and clubs.

Love some advice.

In the past I have gone with a  TG friend and we can look after each other, maybe. But Cindy has reached another level and is going out.  I'm not Gay so I like to go to none Gay places. Yes I'm learning the rules. But advice is accepted.

I can't really help in the bar situation, but I've only really drank a drink after my mother, recently we went out to eat and she got this nice tea that I wanted some of, she was sick luckily I didn't get sick.

When I was a kid, if we were sharing something, we'd always wipe it with our hands or the sleeve of whatever.

Still I survive.

Colds can be had from many sources in my experience. Including hand contact. If you were flirting and he kissed you, that would do it.

What, alcohol kills both germs and bacteria, all in all its a pretty good antiseptic.^*  If you were swiggin' off of a bottle of Jack Black and passing it back and forth I doubt you would catch the cold.

* - Whiskey and other high alcohol grain liquors are recommended in most wilderness medical books as an effective substitute for straight rubbing alcohol if you need to sterilize something in an emergency.

At least in sharing a drink you will know you won't be slipped a drug.  But then again he did slip you the flu bug.

Janet, no offense, but that sounds like something the great DR. Seuss would say.

I was always a drink sharing phobe. Alot of fancy mixed drinks come with straws at bars, ask for two, can help cut down. Avoid sharing with people who backwash.

As for spiked drinks - never leave your drink unattended - preferably keep it in hand, but in site is okay too. Only takes a second for someone to slip in roofies. there's no harm in taking the drink to the bathroom with you if you don't have a trusted female friend to watch it for you. Unless youre married to the guy, or havevery high level of trust for him.. it's better to be safe then sorry. Guys take their drinks to the bathroom too.. so don't worry about it. And if you're going to drink - it's good to have a sober friend along who can keep a watch on shady character and stuff that you may not notice when you're intoxicated.

Or just hang with people who will get you your own drink - a rather easy solution.

Alcohol is used extensively in research labs etc to sterilise benches and kill bacteria etc. Admittedly, it is usually 70-100% ethanol!

Well if it's a cold it's viral, rhino-viruses can't survive even low levels of alcohol however consider that they travel through droplet infection While there might not be cold viruses in the alcohol per say you were exposed to really dirty surroundings, The bartender could have sneezed into there hand then only wiped it off on there legs then it could have been transferred to the SIDE glass where there is no alcohol you could have picked it up there. otherwise you could have walked past an infected person and picked it up from them sneezing or coughing if someone sneezes and dosen't cover there mouth viral particles can travel upto 21 meters.

Not only that consider that virus particles are infectious after sitting on a side upto 24 hours so it could have been on the barstool or the door to the toilets or other things that don't get cleaned often. I've run these experiments things like door handles, toilet flushers, stools, coinslots, poolcues, anything alot of people touch then dosen't get cleaned with disinfectant is filthy.

I worked in a nightclub I didn't drink anything ever but I got sick nearly every month from common colds due to the fact that you have to get within 6 inches of anyones face to ever hear anything it's so deafeningly loud.

I've worked at nightclubs for 40+ years now, I don't think I've ever got sick from that.  And.... I can read lips from across the room.  Deafeningly loud, yeah, I've worked Motorhead lots of times.

I imagine daycare workers must have superhuman immune system too.  I know I do, but when a bug slips past my defenses its usually catastrophic.

I think I saw my immune system try to attack a small dog once even....
