I've not encountered many, if any, women who whistle in public, which recently peaked my curiosity.  Girls, do any of you whistle or know any girls who do?  What are your thoughts on this somewhat insignificant matter?

I was told one day after I whistled that women don't do that by a friend. I have noticed it isn't something many women do.

wow. I never thought of that. I used to when I was a kid but I suppose that doesn't count because I'm ftm.

My mom used to put two fingers in her mouth, and give a really loud whistling sound.  That's how we knew that daddy was about to spank us for being troublemakers.

OK, so maybe I exaggerate.  My friends didn't cause that much trouble.  Just every now and then.  Somehow, I always managed to let myself get dragged into it.

LOL... I learned to whistle by trying to imitate a harmonica... But I never could do the real loud "Boy" whistles

I was even told that I whistle like a girl and a boy kissed me on the mouth for some reason when I was trying to whistle 

My ex used to whistle, but she was the only girl I ever knew to whistle as entertainment.  We also used it as a communication when we were separate in the store.

yeah my ex used to but she was pretty lame at it... especially when her complete lack of ability made her laugh. It was cute though.
I think I've noticed this with a lot of things girls generally don't do anything.. they appear pretty simple generally speaking. For example when ever I go to the shops I see girls walk in straight lines very ridged and seemingly self conscious where I jump up on the brick wall and balance/walk along it and jump around but I've always been like that and don't wanna grow out of it. Damn stereotypes and social expectations..turning people into robots. Whenever I see a girl that is playful like that I notice and think "hheeyyy another weirdo like me cool".

If I ever learn how to whistle I definitely would belt out a tune in public! (Dude here)

no whistling? but it's so fun to go down the halls of our uni with everyone in our group trying to whistle or trying to figure out what song one is whistling, while going past open doors with people trying to study!

Lol. I do the same thing. At the supermarket, cant walk on the beige tiles, only the green ones. A game my daughter and I have played since she was little. A woman watched me for a sec as I passed. My daughter just said "We are not REALLY related you know  " Hehehe.

If you mean whistle with two fingers in your mouth then no, I never could. My mother could do it and I think Alison could too but I can't.

If on the other hand you mean whistle a little tune softly by pursing your cheeks then yes I can, but then so can just about every other girl I know.

No never could.
My wife can't either nor my 2 sisters.
But we hum a tune occasionally.

Cisfemale. I have whistled since I was a small kid. I recall the night I first worked it out. I jumped out of bed to demonstrate it to my parents. I whistle tunes frequently and get great pleasure out of it (although a friend who heard me commented that not many women whistle). I can't do a seriously loud, two-fingered whistle (damn!!) but if I am trying to attract  someone's attention over a distance I will whistle.

Yes, I whistle sometimes going down the street.
I've been told that women don't do that.
Feh, I don't do it that much anyway.

I do show kids how to whistle with an acorn top.
Once you get the technique down you can do that with many small objects.

This seems to be one of those bizarre social norms that people aren't even aware of.  When I hear someone whistling a tune, it is usually a man.  When I hear someone hum a tune, it is usually a woman.  What's up with that?

I've thought about this before. I remember watching Kill Bill, and there's a scene where Daryl Hannah is walking and whistling a tune. I thought to myself that it looked kind of odd, and that you don't see many women whistling.

I don't whistle as much as I used to, but not because I think it's not what women do.. I just don't do it for some reason. Occasionally I will, but I'd rather hum or sing a bit.

I can whistle loudly with my fingers as well, but I don't do that because it involves sticking my fingers in my mouth. Yuk.

never heard a woman whistle and very few males do theses days but on Andre Reiu orchestra show recently one of the tunes neeeded some very loud fingers in mouth whistling and it was a girl that did it.

I never could. My mother in law can whistle really well. So can Erocse. When I hear Erocse whistling while busy I know she is feeling good and it is nice.

whistling with two fingers in my mouth, is something that sadly I have never been able to do .. and often ended up biting my own fingers while trying it... 

but I love whistling tunes every once in a while... with the fingerless softer version of whistling ...
