Sorry, I got caught up in the mindset of the article writer.
Castration for GM's in my view seems to be viewed like abortion for GG's, there seems to be a stigma you are ending the ability of reproduction which some doctors seem to feel uncomfortable to do (maybe because they are GM's themselves). I've found that even in the case of development of prostate cancer that they are backing off the old treatment of removing the testicles to reduce the testosterone levels. The trend seems to be to give medications which block the testosterone.
Castration is big, however, in the animal husbandry industry. My father in law use to ask me to help him castrate young bulls. Effectively there are two methods. The first is to cut the scrotum with a sharp knife, reach in an cut off the testicles and remove them then allow the sac to naturally heal. The other was to use a tool like a pair of pliers which stretched out a very small rubber ring which went over the testes then was released. Either the band would cut off the flow from them or cause the testes to fall off eventually. I actually couldn't deal with it like he could. Although these days I am wondering which would hurt the most, the continual pain I am suffering or the pain of the rubber bands.

Don't ask why I know so much about this otherwise you'll get a grizzly answer and insight to darker more desperate and distressed side to myself.
There is another method used in animal husbandry a large vice like clamp known as a Burdizzo clamp, it crushes the cords and the testis die.
the pain level involved in all is extreme but because the pain accociated with the crushing clamps and angle of grip you have to get someone to use it on you. the pain apparently lasts a couple of hours and is apparently a 22 out of 10
The problem is that the clamps are designed for cattle and goats not humans, The vascularity is different cows arteries are more "crunchy" high carbohydrate than the human arteries which are "chewy" Lipid cholesterol type leaving the crushing with a low success rate but there is a low risk of bleeding or hemorrhage or infection the downside is that the clamp must be operated by a willing strong and slightly skilled volunteer .
The banding technique you describe can be used however it's considered undesirable.
The bands however hurt like nothing else on the same level as a clamp but for over 48 hours as the tissue dies gradually, however the bands are also undesirable because leave you nonviable for SRS in future as you loose alot of scrotal tissue the bands are also dangerous for high risk of infection.
For humans there is an additional method that has been used on labrats normally... That is you take a syringe of concentrated ethanol and water inject it into your testis the alcohol will cause extreme local tissue trauma yet any poison escaping into your bloodstream will be broken down by your liver with ease Repeated injections will leave your testicles a twisted lump of scar tissue. The pain is mental a 15 out of 10 but lasts a couple of hours. And the injections need to be done repeatedly over many months, Aswell as difficulty obtaining pure high quality ethanol which isn't adulterated... The adulterants Benzene can cause leukemia.
