This year is a census year; a time to collate details about exactly who makes up the population of New Zealand.

A gender diversity group is calling on people to tick both boxes in the sex question in this year's census.

Spokesperson Maddy Drew says the '2 Ticks 4 Sex' campaign wants Statistics NZ, which runs the census, to add a gender option.

"We're encouraging people to tick both boxes in the sex question in this year's census... for people who don't fit into either the male or female box," Drew tells 3 News.
