BANGKOK — The president of the first Thai airline to hire transsexuals as flight attendants on Thursday said he was a "pioneer" and predicted other carriers would follow his lead.

PC Air, which has yet to take to the skies, selected three "Ladyboys" in its first round of hiring this week to promote equal opportunities for what is dubbed the "third sex" in Thailand.

Peter Chan, the new airline's boss, is enthusiastic about his groundbreaking move because of the opportunities it would afford transsexuals.

In a first for the global airline industry, a newly-formed Thai airline seeks to employ the "third sex" to promote equal opportunities for transsexuals, according to the Telegraph.

PC Air boss Peter Chan has already recruited six transsexual crew members and will hire more. He told the Agence France Presse that the recruitment was driven by a belief in equal rights.

A newly formed airline in Thailand has hired six transsexuals as flight attendants in an effort to promote equal opportunities for what's called the "third sex" in Southeast Asia, according to London's Telegraph.

More than 100 transsexuals applied for the coveted positions with PC Air, and more are expected to be hired, the airline's president, Peter Chan, told AFP.

For several decades, Thailand has been one of the world's major areas of sexual tourism. This dubious glory of the country owes much to the movement of transvestites and transsexuals. Yet, outside the realm of sex-service representatives, "the third gender," even in uber liberal in terms of sexual morality Thai society, was not in demand. Aviators decided to change this unfair situation. Airline P. C. Air has decided to employ transsexuals on aircraft as flight attendants.

Among the 30 people hired by Thai carrier to start work on March 1 as flight attendants, three were representatives of the "third gender." Among them is the winner of a beauty contest among the transsexuals Miss Tiffany 2007 Tanyarat Dzhirapatpakon.

Air were guided not only by the desire to equalize the representatives of the "third gender" in the rights with adherents of traditional gender roles. I wish people would STOP calling transsexuals a "third gender" which we are NOT. This is another example of this term being incorrectly used. It sounds to me what this airline is doing is hiring gender variant individuals since they are using the term "ladyboy." If they were talking about transsexuals in the correct sense, the entire article would make no sense at all since they would simply be hiring non-natal men or women who probably would look and act like any natal man or woman. In any case, I will give them a thumbs up for their promotion of gender diversity.
